Hey Everyone,

I have a question for all small youtubers and even people who have recently been youtubers but have gotten bigger than the small range, what worked for you in growing your channel? Most importantly though, what did you try that DIDN'T work well for you channel?

I find that looking at things that didn't work out well can be pretty beneficial. So I would be highly interested in hearing about your experiences.


(Things that have helped my channel out so far. Twitter mainly. What didn't work for me. Not knowing how to properly edit my content in the beginning.)

I don't even know if I'm an appropriate candidate for answering this question as I'm not exactly swimming in dat fresh new subscriber feelin', but I do know that maintaining an active presence on social media - namely Facebook & Twitter - has really worked in my favour. My friends were very supportive when I started out, some shared my videos around, family members and old school friends have been really encouraging, I've joined Facebook groups that specialise in building a community for smaller YouTubers - and they were all extremely supportive when I announced yesterday that I was signed with Maker Studios. I've got almost 70 likes on that status alone!

Even if it does sometimes feel like you're just screaming pointlessly into the void, people are listening. They are reading and sometimes, they'll reply back. Your following (regardless of size) will always appreciate that you've taken the time to share your life and happiness with them.
 
right now i'm at about 60 subs but i've gone up a lot in the last few weeks. i really think its because i started to interact with people. replying to comments regularly, joining communities on Facebook and joining this forum and being active in the community. a lot of people hate when they just post content and don't interact. i was like that in the beginning and it didn't work. twitter has helped a bit i've met a few good people and now i help promote them and have future collab partners. only down side to twitter is it seem more like bots more then anything. i use tumblr but to be honest i have know idea how much traffic i get through it. sub for subs help a little but to be honest there empty subs with know real following, if its something you do then do what you gotta do. another big thing is taking feed back, cant make everyone happy but its a push in the right direction. balancing quality over quantity is a balancing out, for my self right now i put out about 4-6 videos a week, but at the same time i try to make them the best quality i can cause its al about the visuals. people like things that pop or stand out, so thumbnails, good intros and outro's. keep your work organized with playlists, people need to be able to find your videos. These are some things that have worked for me thus far and i've gotten good feed back that way. worst thing someone can do is spam, i think will prevent a channel from growing.

Promoting In the right community works well. I post a video about Android, found the right android community and hit 100+ views in a day. So promoting in the right community works well, specifically google plus community.

No worries, your response was more than welcomed! I've been using twitter and it's been fairly responsible for my channel rising so far. I would dare to say it's been a huge success for me so far and I've actually met quite a few new friends through it. It does hurt my soul a little bit to be using an auto DM feature on there though from time to time. Facebook hasn't really worked out for me to say the least. It's like "I have a facebook page....I guess" but I'm not really sure what to do with it minus the occasional post saying that I uploaded a video. What communities were you able to find? Also, congratulations on getting signed!! That's really amazing! I hope to one day get to the point where I could be signed with them as well. Your response was very motivating and appreciated!

Truth be told, you're the first person I've met who has used Google Plus to an advantageous point (which is pretty cool!). It becomes a bit hard for to use more than one social media platform at a time but I have been giving thought to using G+ once again as well.

Wow. That's quite an experience you've had so far. Thank you much for this response. I find it really easy to relate to your post because I've gone through the same kind of experimentation with my channel. It was really tough for me as well to find out what worked and what didn't when I started. Your points are pretty much things that I feel small channels need to know about.

Glad I could help!
I'm yet to create a Facebook page for my YouTube channel yet - I'll be doing that when I've built up my community a little more, and it'll more than likely be a mixture of "like comment sub me mlg pro 10/10 youtube skillz" and "hoo boy i just ate an apple arent u glad u liked dis page subscribe 4 more 10/10 content". At the moment, there's not really enough for me to warrant creating a separate page - when it comes to Facebook, you're judged a lot more on your level of activity, I find. So start promoting your Facebook when you're more confident you'll be able to update it more often. Most YouTubers tend to sync up their Twitter & Instagram accounts and write the occasional status.

I'm in a number of groups on Facebook - none of this sub4sub nonsense - and they build themselves around small YouTubers all coming together with a similar objective. I've made some great friends through these groups - although, it's a freakin' minefield as you'll find yourself dodging spammers and beggars more often than not.

And thank you! I'd been planning to sign with Maker for a while. I applied a couple of days ago after I hit my subscriber goal for 2015, and they accepted me yesterday!
 
i had the advantage of already being in the community and being semi known from here an their for my music so it made it easy.. had the channel for 3-4 years made it too 15k subs so far. and 3 or 4 videos hit over a million subscribers.. just wish i could use it to help my gaming channel but my music channel is 1 all about music and would lok like im just trying to promote other stuff if i put anything about it their and 2.. all the audiencew i have on that channel speaks spanish lol
