First Commentary?

So I'm trying to make a gaming commentary, I've really tried to think about what I want to say and I've got it planned out in dot points. I've looked at hundreds of 'tip' videos for commentaries so I've practically heard all the advice there is. But still, I just come to a point in recording where my nerves give in and I start to stumble and forget what to say and start spamming the 'ums' and 'ahs'.

Do you think as a first time this is understandable? And if you're a commentator yourself what were your experiences when starting out? Would you say this is something that can only be improved through practise?
 
It's not about nerves really, I mean maybe it is, but it's mainly because your mind isn't used to having to play a game AND commentate at the same time. It used to happen to me all the time (it still happens to me more often than I'd like...just not "all the time") where I'd get to a hard part in a game and I'd just trail off mid-sentence. Then by the time I finish the hard part I'd forget what I was going to say.

You can try post-commentary for the first few videos until you get the hang of just coming up with things to say (be sure it's not all "here I did XYZ"), or try recording a very short video a few times live until you get it just right. Or, you can do live and just edit your commentary to remove ums and uhs after you're done recording. :)
 
Just let it flow is my best advice. (Not really the guy to ask but I can answer.) I just see it as a way to talk about stuff on your mind. Try to write down what happened during your day that you want to talk about in a video.
 
I find that when I start my "ums" and "uhhs" I can easily just start talking about something else completely random and I can flow with that :D[DOUBLEPOST=1382324413,1382324376][/DOUBLEPOST]Also it is understandable for a first time. I'm sure the majority of youtubers had that happen to them!
 
At least you have an excuse, I usually forget or get too immersed in a SP game to comment at times xD Also it does improve with practice, I got a little better for solo stuff but I don't do any solo stuff currently. I might take another shameful shot at it. I also don't bother with topics, especially playing with friends. In a GTA IV playthrough we're doing we end up talking about GTA V and random stuff. In a Defiance playthrough I'm doing with another mate, talked about completely different games and stuff that isn't even relevant to Defiance. Why? Because it's more natural and entertainting. I have subs that have said they actually like my videos.

Yeah, this pretty much sums me up playing games solo. Even dual commentary I can get immersed at times if I'm not careful. This is why I want to try playing through a game at least once or getting used to it first.
 
If you're are doing Let's Plays then I agree with soulred12. It still happens to me alot, more than i'd like to admit. Sometimes tho, its just gonna happen. Take my megaman 9 playthrough, and i've been playing this for awhile and wanna get through so there were times I just noticed I wasn't saying anything because I got to focused. It just takes time, practice and being in a good mood.
 
This is hugely to do with nerves but keep it in your mind to "STAY CONFIDENT" confidence is key in anything buddy. Your first commentary will always be worse then your others but soon you will get into the swing of things and enjoy making the videos a whole lot more. It'll also feel more natural the more you do it so... GOOD LUCK!
