Final Cut Pro versus iMovie

If you are used to using iMovie. honestly Final Cut Pro X will come as almost second nature to you. the only thing you will need to get used to is the slue of extra new features. Now if you really want to upgrade and go pro. I would suggest the Adobe Suite. it is a little harder to get used to. but there are tutorials everywhere heck you are even welcome to ask me questions and ill be happy to help you. so yeah go Adobe. best value for your money

FCP X is a joke. It's literally iMovie Pro. Get FCP 7 if you want to get Final Cut Pro at all.

That is precisely what Final Cut Pro X is. That is what I have been saying ever since it's release... You could cut a blockbuster movie on Final Cut Pro 7, but X is just whole step in the wrong direction.

For the OC, I highly recommend purchasing Adobe Premiere Pro. Although the learning curve is a bit more steep, it is worth it in the long run. The amount of things you can do in Premiere dwarfs FCP X.

I'd go with final cut pro, but probably not the most recent version. I hear a lot of bad reviews of Final Cut Pro 10.

I need to upgrade my editing program, but is Final Cut Pro hard to get used to after using iMovie for a few years?

It depends upon the version.
iMove is a great editor with the advanced features enabled. I dont care what people say, its a superb starting point, and you can make some fantastic content using iMovie. Some of the biggest YouTubers still use iMovie!
Where iMovie is lacking is in its output quality. It doesnt seem to handle darker areas and shadows very well and you sometimes get banding and pixelation in your output - its well documented on the Apple forums - but Apple do not seem to bothered in addressing the issue!

I therefore moved from iMovie to Final Cut Pro X. It was very easy to learn. Its like iMovie on steroids! FCPX is a great, powerful, editor and I personally love it (bear in mind Ive never used previous versions of Final Cut Pro before). Its a natural progression from iMovie, and I cant see myself needing to use, or wanting to use, anything else.

It all boils down to what you need it to do. Some people love Premier and Adobe etc because its a heavy duty editor etc, but rarely use all the extra features anyway, especially when it comes to YouTube. FCPX is a very capable editor, and I know a couple of movie makers who edit entirely in FCPX, Motion, etc. In fact, a good friend of mine has an editing company, where they produce wedding videos, mini movies, etc all to customer order, and they entirely use Final Cut - and they are turning over 6 figure numbers yearly, easily.

Highly recommended by me ;)

It shouldn't be. You'll hear a lot of people complain about FCP X as a professional video editing software. I think it's great for videos and has a very iMovie-like feel to it and it very easy to get used to. I would not recommend you go to Final Cut Pro 7, that would most likely confuse you.
