I use "Free Video To Flash Converter" when I have large files and compress them to a different format to make them smaller. Not exactly what you were talking about, but it's still a helpful tool.

You probably have already sorted out getting a program but I personally really recommend Handbrake, I really love it and haven't had any problems with it so far. You can also queue videos up and just leave a queue converting.
