Evolution of youtube

I prefer the like/dislike button over star ratings. In my opinion star ratings create a difficult position for viewers. Depending on the personality of a viewer, typically they would either be on opposite ends of the spectrum. Either they would exaggerate ratings and only rate videos 5 stars or 1 stars to either show their love or distaste for something, or they would give hesitant ratings, and reserve 5 ratings for almost impossible standards, or never give 1 star ratings as they didn't want to offend someone. What you end up with in star ratings system is really an average of ratings that ends fluctuating between 2 and 4. (even some of the highest rated videos back in 2008 were only around a 4.5 star rating)

What does a rating tell you between 2 and 4? Well an average star rating between 2 and 3 means that the majority of people disliked your video, while an average star rating of between 3 and 4 means that the majority of people liked your video... Make it a matter of simplifying and you end up with like/dislike buttons and a green/red ratio bar.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if they transitioned to a +1 google plus system where there are no negative ratings. There is a reason facebook doesn't utilize a thumbs down button. Very few people enjoy receiving negative criticism. When you put hard work and effort into a video the last thing you want to see is a lot of dislikes or low ratings.

My favorite and least favorite changes both relate to the new youtube layout. I think the partner banner and link integration into your youtube channel is incredible and offers so many varieties of ways to market yourself on your channel to other social platforms. But I am disappointed that it is only available to partners and I feel they left out some of the best features from the old layouts like the ability to complete create custom backgrounds and use a transparent layer on your youtube page. I think they basically added and removed some creative freedom on our channels with the new layout.

very good point about the rating system, didn't really think about it from the viewer perspective!
