Everybody needs to chill out about the new layout

1 - "This is killing small channels"

How ? How is this killing small channels? As a small channel owner myself I don't see it. The new channel layout is more unified, it's easier to switch between your content and other content via the Guide AND you even have "Recommended Channels" that is right under the nose of the audience of bigger channels that promotes smaller ones !

2- "It looks like crap"

That's your taste, I think it's more unified and makes for a better user experience trough YouTube by never switching page/layout for no reason like before.

3- "It's not what the user wants"

Power* user. The general user (75% of the YouTube population by the last numbers) doesn't even have an account , and with each of the latest layout changes, the overall view and subscribe-trough numbers went up, they are clearly providing good change for 75% of the website's user, who are the people who might subscribe to you so you might wanna please them.

4- "It kills creativity"

If on a website about video sharing you need a 400x400 px image to display your creativity, you are doing YouTube wrong. First off : This is not Myspace, more unification is good. Second : You now have a classy banner that is bigger than before is feels more "on top" of the content, and the Trailer option that gives you the possibility of displaying a video to only the people who aren't subbed to you is amazing, you can have your own channel trailer on YouTube without doing it the old way where it was hiding your other content !

Overall, to me , this is a powerfull change that will bring in more subscription per video watched and overall a better YouTube for small and big channels.

Debate on.

THANK YOU!!!! Now as I've said, I find the design is butt-ugly and very uninspired. It's a shame that background are gone, and stuff. But a great/terrible background/header won't make or break your channel... your videos will. If anything it's damaging the larger channels and other networked partners as it's taking away the features that were once exclusive to them. But it won't make people unsubscribe smaller channels or avoid them, since everyone will have the same channel look.

AS for the designers, yes that is a shame, but you have to move with the times. Just like how records and tapes are no longer the thing, YouTube backgrounds are going the same way. It's business.

1) Because all the channels now look the same, so you can`t tell apart a good small channel from a bad one
2) That`s 99.9% of youtube`s taste it now looks like a basic HTML site a 4 year old could make...
3) These changes are only here for 6 accounts until feb 22nd.... lol
4) 2100x1200 , YouTube is all about expressing youself as a person, we could do that with the old layout, wow we get a trailer now... yea we had that before on the featured page, the only difference was before partners could get paid for the video there....

also there is now very little differences between partnered and non-partnered channels, so why YouTube invested close to a billion dollars into networks last year is a mystery....

1) You use a 2100 x 1200 banner to feel the quality of a channel's videos. Here lays your problem.
2) That's your opinion, not a fact
3) How is this a rebuttal to my point ? I like green marmalade, here, make a counter-point.
4) Expressing yourself in a video, why are you crying about a small piece of JPEG file, holy jeez. Also I didn't get your point about partnership and payment, not only this has nothing to do with the subject, your sentence doesn't make sense.

And what about designers like these who create AMAZING backgrounds and GFX for channels not only will they have to stop or drastically drop their prices, but they can no longer create such good content... :

And what about car painters who won't be able to paint cars if they switched from metal to mirrors? This argument is nonsense.

I would love a little partner checkmark or an icon/sign like Verified on Twitter for partners.
Apart from that I love it.

Yeah that'd be nice, even just a standard 'partner' logo for networked partners or something.

There`s 1000s of designers on youtube and you`re saying my argument is nonsense... wth is wrong with you....

Something I havent seen anyone complain about yet is the popular channels section on the right, doesnt that mean we will be driving traffic away from our channels to the bigger YouTubers? I know we dont get masses of traffic on the channels but still it seems we could lose out if everyone visiting does click away onto whoever is "popular".

That is a problem also, youtube see that at the moment. The popular channels generate them more income then lower channels and they do not want to take a risk in delving into smaller channels which could become something at a later date. I see it like real life, we should invest in the younger generation to make a better future. Same goes with youtube, invest in the smaller/not so popular channels to make a better future for youtube.
