Elagto HD or roxio hd pro

Yes you can use the software like that, but I recommend if you doing youtube seriously that you use Sony Veags or Premiere imstead of the roxio software.

its just for now until i can get enough for money for it lol

I've been using an Elgato Game Capture HD to record console footage to my ultrabook for a while now and my general opinion of it is the the hardware is excellent but their software leaves a fair amount to be desired, though I can only speak to Windows. It's easy to use but has a number of flaws.

-It records game audio and commentary on a single audio track in the output file so if you like to tweak your commentary audio independently, you can't do it with this unless you record it separately in another application. I've also had problems before with it inserting pops and clicks into the recorded audio, though this is very inconsistent and I'm not 100% sure it isn't the crappy IDT audio chip in my laptop that's causing that.
-It doesn't reliably stop recording when you ask it to. You want to make sure you give yourself at least 5-10 seconds after you're done your video before you press the record button again to stop, otherwise it will often cut off the last couple of seconds.
-It does a lousy job of indicating its encoding progress to you. When you stop a video, it starts to encode the final file. However, it gives no progress meter at all and only shows a progress bar in the taskbar icon. But it only does this sometimes and not others. If it doesn't, you have to watch your hard disk activity light and make sure it stops flashing because if you close the software or start recording again before encoding it done, you'll end up with an unusable file. I can't for the life of me think why they designed it this way. It should have a window pop up with a clear indication of the encoding process and not allow you to use the software further until it's done.
-The device is supported by popular live streaming/recording tools like XSplit and OBS but the problem is, the device has a multi-second lag between what's being shown on the TV and what's running through the encoder. The Elgato software compensates for this but third-party software cannot. You have to manually adjust the audio lag compensation in XSplit/OBS to match the delay exactly or your audio will go out of sync. It's a real pain to do this and it's never consistent. There is no way to remove the lag.
-It only records off HDMI or through the component adapter it comes with. If you want to record a PC, you need to output it through HDMI into this device and then record into another PC.

I sent an e-mail to Elgato support suggesting some improvements they could make to the software and asking them about the pop and click audio issue. To their credit, they responded in minutes but all they basically said was "Thanks for your feedback, we'll pass this onto the engineers for their consideration." which basically means it'll never actually go anywhere.

Overall, I do still really like it and the hardware is fantastic (captures in great quality) but their software is not great and needs improvement. Given that an update hasn't been released in the 3 months I've owned the device, they don't seem too enthusiastic about iterating it. It can be worked with though and I still use it to great success. Every episode of my All Together Now series and every Retro Flashback episode that references the Wii or Wii U Virtual Console was made using the Game Capture HD.

I use aduacity for my recordings really and yeah the software is basic but i can use a different software to edit it so thats good but thanks anyway :)

You could just get the elgato, which is awesome and small and easy to set up and just use software like cyberlink powerdirector or sony vegas to edit.

Sorry, I meant to mention in my post that I only use the Elgato software to capture video, not to edit it. I use Sony Movie Studio Platinum (basically Vegas Lite cause Vegas was too expensive for me) to do my editing. All my comments are in regards to how the capture side of the Elgato software works. No word of a lie, I've never once clicked on the Edit button. :)
