you should try to get an older vegas they tend to run better since each previous versions have slightly fewer features i use 10 and it runs pretty well on my laptop overall.

He has sony vegas 12, windows movie maker would be a huge downgrade.lol. Its very basic and you don't have a lot of freedom for creativity, like you cant have more than one audio channel and one or two video channels.

I had issues with my sony vegas as well but it was because my desktop wasn't fully compatible. But I bought a new laptop that can handle good editors; but I wanted to try Adobe premiere, and I like it a lot, but there are a lot of effects I miss from Sony.
 
Despite the bad rep that it has, I really like using Final Cut X for my videos. It does everything I need it to do and more.

I have a Nvidia Graphics card and it kept crashing when I imported files, I figured out it was the GPU acceleration that was causing it, so now when I disabled GPU acceleration Vegas seems to work fine

Power Director 11 is very clean, lots of options, and works smoothly. I own a higher end laptop and it runs very smoothly. Also it's a very affordable program. I'm very happy with it.
