Hi,

Anybody knowledgeable can drop a few names of DSLRs that I can look into for getting the most "cinematic" HD look?

I'm going to use it with tripod and "semi-pro" lights setup.

I don't want anything very cheap, but 5D Mark III is also too expensive for me.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Canon T2i, T3i, T4i, and now the T5i has been announced. Image quality wise they are all pretty much the same camera. Really look into a good lens once you get one. A good lens makes all the difference.

If you want a full-frame DSLR (as far as Canon goes), but can't afford the Mark iii; you can grab a 6D.

That said, I'd probably just go with the 650D (t4i) if you're going to be *in* any of your shots. The flip-out screen works wonders :)

Alright then, thanks! What lens for you recommend for filming? Steady, not much movement during filming, about 2-3 meters away from the camera (mid-shot). Tripod + lightning.

No photography whatsoever.

If you're going to be auto-focusing, I'd recommend NOT getting a STM lens - the camera mics are terrible anyway, so the noise-less focusing isn't going to matter, and the STM is slower to focus.

Look into one of the 50mm lenses. We have the 50mm F1.4 and it is great! However I have heard that the 50mm F1.8 "The Nifty Fifty" is a great lens as well.

For 2-3 feet away? I'm not so sure.

I'd recommend the 10-22mm wide-angle lens for stuff that close.
Oh crap, I must've missed that. Yeah 50mm would be way to zoomed in for that close. Definitely go wider for that close. Or just scoot back ;)

Thanks guys, that's very helpful.

Hmmm, that's a pickle. Most of the videos are mid-shot (nothing below the torso and above the head, ish). But I do think I'll need to record a wider picture once in a while with me standing full-height.

In this case, would 20mm or 50mm be better, and if so, which one exactly would you recommend, as I see you have a lot of experience in this field?

It really depends on how far away you can be from the camera. I would personally recommend the 50mm F1.4 because the picture from it is amazing. It has great depth of field as well! Very cinematic. However this lens is fixed at 50mm so it is zoomed in quite a bit, so you would have to back up a little.
