DSLR or Camcorder for gameplays?

Hi there! :wavespin:

I'm just diggin and can't find any post about how people record themselves (not the game) for gameplays or how to do it well...

I want the quality of a Canon 7D MKII DSLR but don't like the, around 12 minutes of 1080p/60fps video limit I will have with it... That's why I was thinking on a Camcorder (Sony AX33 or AX100)...
Also a few Compacts and Bridges cameras like the G7X, FZ1000 gives a very good quality videos, but with the same s****y limit...

So my question is, for the gameplays, does the people usually footage like 1h for example of video and then edit it?
Or is it fine to play and try to stop each 12 minutes, pause the game, resume and start recording again?

I don't know if that will be a pain in the a**, as I think it will be...

Thanks in advance! :)

Well for my gameplays that I have a face cam for I just use my webcam that was maybe 30$ on amazon. It is ok quility but if I were to upgrade it would probably only be to like another webcam because they probably make nicer ones than this one I bought ages ago. Also OBS is one of the easier ways to record your gameplay, and your face cam at the same time so you don't have to try syncing it or anything. And personally I record in big lump recordings. I tried the whole stoping recording and starting back up back to back thing, and it did not end well. It left room for tons of error, and it led to tons ragging on my part haha

I know Pewds uses a camcorder. I believe most people use webcams. The thing about the camera itself though is that it will only take up a small portion of the screen so it doesn't need to be the greatest thing ever. Most people record in a chunk and then edit it. Also if you wanna get super technical with your it you can also add a green-screen to the back and add some lighting to your face.

I'd say go camcorder or webcam as they are both designed to record and can produce great quality footage.

Recording in chunk tends to be easier to edit as you dont have to string loads of videos together which could loose quality or even unsync your audio (can be your worst nightmare)

What about GoPro? That's a question, not a statement, as I am curious about "face-recording" too :)

Problem with a go pro is that the footage is all kind of "warped" as its a wide-angle lens so you'd capture pretty much everything and it'd look weird.

Also if you wanna get super technical with your it you can also add a green-screen to the back and add some lighting to your face.

What he said^ If you want to step even higher up from just a camera, go green screen or black screen (not sure what the technical name is) and add some lighting to light yourself up more. Green screen you can chroma key the background out and just have yourself imposed over the video while with the black screen it looks neater (imo)

If you wanna see how videos look with a camcorder + lighting + coloured screens i highly recommend watching jacksepticeye

Use a webcam, they're cheaper and you can record directly to your PC so you won't have to worry about storage space as much, you can also record in 480-720p as you'll be using less than 25% of the screen for face cam. I think you can get a DSLR/camcorder that can also work as a webcam, some of them have that feature (mainly camcorders not sure about DSLR) but you'll have to look into that.

Some game recording apps also have inbuilt face cam recording functionality that allow you to position your facecam video over the top of your game video while you record and even play, personally I'd split them up if I did face cam only because that way you can position it where you want, resize it, delete bits you don't want etc... all in the editing stage instead of having it stuck in the raw footage.

I've seen the 60fps being mentioned by the OP. So what would be the best option for recording in 60fps? One Youtubers I'm watching - Ovvy - has a great quality facecam footage. It looks silky smooth but he's using a Canon Powershot G7X and it's pretty expensive.

You shouldn't need to record yourself in 60fps. 24fps should be fine being that you are sitting still. Also your gameplay and video as a whole can still have 60fps as long as you correct the file settings when editing

Hi! Thanks for the comments everyone :)

I forget to tell that I already have a Blue Spark microphone for the sound attached to a sound card, so the sound it doesn't matter to me on the camera at all...

I have a tripod, 64GB Class 10 SD for the camera and a led panel to add some light so all that is under control :up2:

I just need the camera (the most important thing xD). I think the AX33 or AX100 from Sony could be a good option if we are talking about camcorders but I love the DSLR quality... Some Canons starts another video file when the 4gb limit reaches automatically, so maybe is a good option...

I really want the 60fps quality but I'm thinking on recording at 24/30fps for the videos to be accesible to more people that maybe have worse computers...

The videos from Jacksepticeye looks so good! Wich camera did he use? Maybe the Canon G7X...

There are webcams that can do 60fps. They may get a bit pricey (in regards to standard webcam prices) but will still be cheaper than a full blown camera/camcorder. I'd say look into the Logitech C920 they're about $120AU but may only do 60fps at 720P so you'll have to do your research there. It's best to have the face cam matching the smoothness of the gameplay.

If their computer can handle 720P and above then it can handle 60fps, most computers even a few years old should be able to handle 60fps, YouTube isn't that demanding. I'm using a NUC with an i3, 4GB RAM and the intel onboard GPU; that handles 1080P60 fine on YouTube.
