DSLR Lens Recommendations!

Hey Y'all!

I just wanted to know what kind of lenses do you guys recommend using when filming with a DSLR camera.

I'm currently using a Nikon D3200 with an 18-55mm lens. I love the lens when doing close us photography but I'm struggling a little to get good depth of field with it because I have to zoom in a fair bit to blur out the background.

I want to know if anyone has tried other kind of lenses, maybe fish eye lens?

Let me know guys :)

I'm not sure about Nikon but I hear the canon 50mm or nifty fifty is good because it goes to something like f stop 1.4 so if you could find the Nikon equivalent then you would get a really pro effect. They are not zoom lenses though.

Also not a Nikon guy, I shoot strictly on Canon, but I use a 50mm F1.4 and it is an amazing lens! It offers such a crisp image and excellent DOF. So...I would suggest finding a Nikon equivalent of that :)

Fish eye lens are used for wide shots

You want a portrait lens which is 60mm-135mm
They are meant for close-up pictures, and have the ability to make the object of the picture stand out against a blurred background

Thanks for the response! Looks like F1.4 is the way to go but also seem to be outnumbered by Canon people, hopefully I haven't gone for the wrong brand haha!

Thanks Alvan, I'll bare this in mind when I go looking for my next lens!

if you want a blurry background without buying a new lens, go far away from background and get close to your camera

Thanks Sennuh! I'm going to give this a try with my current lens!

btw dont buy a 60mm or 135mm lens... you cant use that for vlogging, are you need to have a massive room
and a external mic with a extension cable so it can closer to you then the camera cause otherwise the audio will suck

Thanks! Yeah it's going to be a little while yet until I get a new lens so I've got plenty of time to do more research. I've got an external shotgun microphone with a long old cable, haven't actually tested it (hope it works haha!) but hopefully the quality on that is better.

Yea don't get a portrait lens for vlogging.
I didn't know you were vlogging, I just thought you wanted to not zoom as much and have depth of field haha

I use a Nikon D3100 with the nifty fifty. Its a 50mm F1.8. its a perfect lens for almost every situation, especially vlogging. I also have my 18-55mm kit lens that I use when I just cant get the 50mm to work when filming a skit.
