Does YT promote the "big" channels too much?

No.

They're a business first and foremost. I'm there are some people who work on GooTube who would love to promote the smaller guys a little bit, but like everyone here has said, promoting and pushing the big guys means more money in the end, and that's what every business is after.

I wouldn't say YouTube stars aren't deserving of the exposure, but YouTube (and the media) could do a better job of showing a larger cross-section of what's going on in video. How many years have we been seeing the same old faces in all the different YouTube promos and such? Things are going to start to look stale and dated when they keep using the same people over and over, and it spreads the wrong message that unless you're one of these chosen few there's no way into the system. Of course the biggest channels from back in the day can't help but get bigger, barring retirement or withdrawing from their accounts, they will likely continue growing. Good for them, but I'd like to see more fresh faces.

I agree 100%! The majority of successful YouTubers put countless hours of hard work to get where they are, but at a certain point YouTube kicked in and now helps push them farther to the top. It would be nice if YouTube could implement a system so people could easily find "up-in-coming" channels.

That's how YouTube works - the bigger you are the more promotion you get. From time to time the algorithm will scan the big guys and if it founds an underperformer it will start to slowly pull it down and another smaller one (or two) will be positioned on its place. As they say - it is quite "Darwinian" out there. :)

It's very common sense. They are going to promote the channels that make them money. Not a new Minecraft channel that only has a few hundred views and 10 subcribers.

I get that youtube is a company and they make money, but the big channels make the most so if youtube had more big channels they would make more money.

That doesn't work. There is a finite audience, and just promoting small to medium sized channels would do is redistribute the viewers. The bigger channels would lose viewership, which would p**s them off. Can you imagine the impact it would have on YouTube if PewDiePie actually opted to move his content elsewhere?
