Does running ads increase traffic?

Hey guys, I'd like to ask an important question, hopefully someone experienced can give me an answer.

As you know Youtube is a business, and they make money off Ads. I have had a friend who runs a reasonably big Youtube channel and they claim that having adverts on your videos actually will increase the chances of you being in related videos (ranking).

Is this something I should be paying attention to? I have currently been running absolutely no adverts on any of my videos, but would I be growing faster/getting my videos out their more if I had adverts running on my videos? Despite the fact that the odd person may be turned off from my videos as a result.

Wow so have I literally been impairing my channel this whole time? I feel so silly!

Does it matter what kind of ads I'm running? Like overlay and instream will have the same effect? I'm worried about people getting put off watching my videos with the instream ads.

I'm not exactly sure if different ads changes it. All I know is monetized videos do better :)
 
Thanks for responding, this really is game changing information for me! I'm going to turn adverts on the videos I can rightfully do so. Thank you! :)
 
I have them always running and the ads varied depending on the price I think I am not entirely sure about it
 
This really is good to know, but (until we learn if some ads usage ranks you higher than others) I'd suggest using the least noticeable ads possible. I can't tell you how many videos from unknown YouTubers I've clicked away from because they tried to have me watch a 15 second commercial beforehand.
