In my honest opinion, a name doesn't necessarily need to have anything to do with what your content is, take mine for example, funky trousers... i do game videos :3
Also, take a look at the most popular youtuber, that swedish b*****d with the annoying voice ¬¬ his name doesn't suggest he games :p

I love the name , but it doesnt matter ..
look at nigahiga or pewdiepie ...
just get a good gimmick

FunkyTrousers and Tremil, thanks for the feedback. I think you're right--I've been overly concerned about my channel name. It's not why people will visit my channel, and it's not the reason people will subscribe. It's just part of the brand, and I need to embrace it.

Now I just need to work on 'being myself' while recording. I guess that will come with time.

By the way FunkyTrousers, I like your banner. It's simple but it pops; I need to make something that does the same.

thanks dude :) i was just messing around and it was a bit of an accident but i liked it XD
good luck with the channel dude :D

I really appreciate those of you that take the time to read all of this and respond.

If nothing else, please vote in the poll. Thanks!

Shorter version:

Should I change my channel name? I started using ‘Master of Melee’ long before I had any intention of uploading videos, and from comments I’ve gotten in some game lobbies, not everyone knows what melee means (those people pronounce it ME-lee). Also, one person wrote me on YouTube: “Hi MoM ;)

Otherwise, the word melee (defined as a confused fight, skirmish, or scuffle) works pretty well for my channel.

Alternatively, I could just keep the channel, but change the display name to ‘Melee Master.’

Another factor is that I feel like I can’t be myself on my current channel. Some family and a few real life friends know about it. I feel reserved and stiff because I know they might see my videos. I don’t want them to see me bomb if I attempt to be funny and fail. I’ve gotten more comfortable, but I don’t know how long it will take me to ‘be myself’ if I know they’re watching.

Longer version (in addition to the above):

Why starting over may not be such a big deal:

I have very few subscribers, and have lost quite a few over my past 5 months of inactivity (due to the illness and then passing of my dad). Also, my current subscribers are probably inactive, so that may not be much of a factor.

Whether I stay with my current channel or go with the new one, I’m going to redo the branding from scratch. I’m also going in a slightly different direction than before; I’m not doing anymore ‘let’s play’ videos. I’m going to focus on ‘best of’ montages, ‘funny’ voiceovers, and videos comparing weapons in a game or patch changes. These are what have done the best for me in the past.

Do you think that a channel name makes *that* much of a difference? I mean you probably wouldn’t want to tell your friend how awesome ‘ButtDoodles’ is, but is the name Master of Melee going to be a hindrance (assuming I get the consistency and quality where it needs to be)?

I’ve used the name ‘I Save the World Daily!’ in forums and other places, and people seem to like it, comment on it, and think it’s funny. It seems to fit for a gaming channel, I think.

Sounds fine to me. Just as long as your name is easy to pronounce and it's not an obscure reference it's easier for people to tell other people about you.
