I really appreciate those of you that take the time to read all of this and respond.

If nothing else, please vote in the poll. Thanks!

Shorter version:

Should I change my channel name? I started using ‘Master of Melee’ long before I had any intention of uploading videos, and from comments I’ve gotten in some game lobbies, not everyone knows what melee means (those people pronounce it ME-lee). Also, one person wrote me on YouTube: “Hi MoM ;)

Otherwise, the word melee (defined as a confused fight, skirmish, or scuffle) works pretty well for my channel.

Alternatively, I could just keep the channel, but change the display name to ‘Melee Master.’

Another factor is that I feel like I can’t be myself on my current channel. Some family and a few real life friends know about it. I feel reserved and stiff because I know they might see my videos. I don’t want them to see me bomb if I attempt to be funny and fail. I’ve gotten more comfortable, but I don’t know how long it will take me to ‘be myself’ if I know they’re watching.

Longer version (in addition to the above):

Why starting over may not be such a big deal:

I have very few subscribers, and have lost quite a few over my past 5 months of inactivity (due to the illness and then passing of my dad). Also, my current subscribers are probably inactive, so that may not be much of a factor.

Whether I stay with my current channel or go with the new one, I’m going to redo the branding from scratch. I’m also going in a slightly different direction than before; I’m not doing anymore ‘let’s play’ videos. I’m going to focus on ‘best of’ montages, ‘funny’ voiceovers, and videos comparing weapons in a game or patch changes. These are what have done the best for me in the past.

Do you think that a channel name makes *that* much of a difference? I mean you probably wouldn’t want to tell your friend how awesome ‘ButtDoodles’ is, but is the name Master of Melee going to be a hindrance (assuming I get the consistency and quality where it needs to be)?

I’ve used the name ‘I Save the World Daily!’ in forums and other places, and people seem to like it, comment on it, and think it’s funny. It seems to fit for a gaming channel, I think.

No your name is great, how the hell does someone play online games that aren't farmville and doesn't know what melee means? xD

Right?! The last time that happened was in Halo a year or so ago. Halo, a game where you're likely to melee once every two minutes. Thanks for your feedback!

You should get a sidekick named DaD and become a gaming duo, then it would be perfect. :p

That wouldn't be so bad if I could be DaD instead of MoM. And if I were a parent. And if I didn't get angry at the mere sight of children. Haha, J/K. Could you imagine?

Vote in mah poll plz.

Hey man,
I enjoy your name as it reminds me on when I used to play Halo, as you brought up in your past comment. But I don't think you should 'start again' - it's such a pain in the a**, just keep going and if you get confused comments explain and ask if you should create a new one. Let your audience decide instead of us - It's better to include the people who are going to remember that name :)

I haven't gotten any confused comments on my channel yet, just in game lobbies. It's just that it got me wondering if their way of thinking was common. It only happened a few times though, and I've been using this name since 2002 on Xbox Live. They were all little kids.

You're right, it would be good to ask my audience, but I just didn't want to wait until I got a sizable audience and *then* start over. I thought it would be better to ask what the general impression is here. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts about it. It is indeed a pain to start over, and I was only going to do it if the response to my current name was overwhelmingly negative.

Hopefully I'll get a lot more responses. Thank you to those that have responded so far. :)
