Does editing your video after it's published effect your video negatively?

Does editing your video after it's published effect your video negatively?

I get paranoid to touch some of my better performing videos after they've been up for a while. So much so that I'd like to add cards to them (older vids) pointing to my newer videos but I'm too afraid this will negatively impact the performance of my old video.

Is there any validity in this or am I being crazy?

As long as you don't delete the video and re-upload it.

If you change the description or tags Google will take a little bit to pick up on the changes for SEO if that's what you're talking about.

Where do Cards and Annotations play into YouTube's algorithm?
Besides call to action it will probably help you a little bit to establish relations between the video being played and the video the user clicks to from your card (which could help you in suggested videos). Of course this will depend on title and tag similarities as well but it's lots of little clues the algorithm uses to find the best relationships for the viewers.

I don't know what you mean specifically by being negatively affected but as far as I know there's no reason it would have any undesirable impact on your video, so don't worry :)

So when you first upload your video YouTube ranks it according to descriptions, tags, whatnot and then lets say your video suddenly gains traction based on aforementioned algorithm and the gods are aligned. I wondered if adding or changing (update) Cards weeks later, would affect the mojo. I guess I worry that it will somehow change the ranking of my video.

Your annotations can be used to send viewers to other videos so if you update a popular video with annotation links to videos then you may be able to divert the traffic to other videos but in terms of the algorithm there is no change for the video when you update the end cards :happy2:

Adding cards won't hurt your video at all, it has nothing to do with the SEO for the video. All cards do is help drive the audience to another one of your videos after they've watched your video! So place them just before the point where 50% of the audience is dropping off anyway.
