Do subscribers matter anymore?

Subscribing is becoming the new like button (from facebook) more people are subscribing then ever. Subscribing used to mean something now it is something you can just blindly do. Plus you don't even have to have a YouTube channel to subscribe just a Gmail address. I have a few Gmail address with no YouTube channel or account what so ever but I can still subscribe to YouTube channels. Even YouTube themselves says on their blog people are subscribing to more channels then ever. I remember back in 2009 when Fred hit 1 million subscribers his videos were getting around 5 million views per videos. Now people are hitting 1 million subscribers that barley are hitting 200k thousand per video. Yes, subscribers matter because obviously your active subscribers are your most loyal viewers. But subscribing is just becoming a thing people do mindlessly, like the people who follow 5,000 people on twitter, do they honestly read all their timeline? The same thing is happening with YouTube.

Hi guys,

So recently I hit 151 subscribers, which is really freaking cool! But each time I upload a video I only get ⅓, maybe ⅔, of those subscribers actually watching the videos.

I just wanted to discuss whether, if not all the subscribers are watching the videos, subscribers really matter anymore.

I'm really interested in hearing your opinions/experiences,

Much love!

Callum xx
I can only confirm that 3 of my subs actually watch my videos because they leave comments sometimes. I don't really care about subs.

Brah, anybody who tells you that subs do not matter probably have absolutely no subs or really a large amount of viewers for that matter! It does matter, it helps in so many ways...for one thing those people if active are good to have, and aswell its another stat that if high enough will boost your reach :)

Another stat? These are actual real life people that we're talking about, not just numbers. In that, I think lies the problem. If you treat subscribers as a number and not as people, then of course you want as high a number as possible. I have just over 180 subs and I am happy with the friends that watch, like, and comment on my videos. I tweet them, I go on google hangouts with them. They're friends, not numbers.

Youtube used to be focussed on making friends but now it's become so easy to do, that people are settling in for the numbers.

He is asking about the statistic of subscribers, not asking about the personal side of it. He didn't ask about a specific person, he asked about his ratios...so I responded with an answer suitable to his question. Don't be so self righteous either, I have 10x the amount of people watching my videos and I interract with every single one of them that comments, tweets or messages me....it doesn't make you more worthy of views mate.

That's a nice extrapolation of my logic you've made there. Well done.

Growing your subscriber count is very important. 1/3 to 1/2 subs/views ratio is typical in the beginning. You will find the ratio getting smaller and smaller as your channel grows. It is more important that you focus on your audience retention.

It is a number. And the bigger the number, the more likely you are to grow bigger. Because people LOVE big numbers and want to be part of them. So yes, even though it is a number it still very much matters. You could have the best content in the world, but if you have no subscribers you will get passed over for a channel that does have subscribers. The bigger getting bigger, and the smaller... grow slow.

I agree. I wish the subs would watch the vids more. I also feel silly at time telling people to 'leave their comments below' even though most of the time, noone really does.
