Do Pop Filters Really Help When Recording Gameplay?

Exactly right. It's not going to enhance your voice or make you an instant Morgan Freeman.. But reducing the little things can make a big difference in your final product
But what if I wanted to be an instant Morgan Freeman? :C
 
All they do is block air hitting the mic as stated by @Faptain from P's in words. If you're using a Dynamic Mic like an SM58 then just get a windshield. :)
 
Pop filter will also stop moisture, from your talking, from getting into the mic; which in turn, will allow the mic to last longer. Tarmack is the best to talk to about this, he is very knowledgeable in this subject. As he has stated before, a big reason why most people use pop filters is because they do not know how to speak into a microphone correctly.
