Do looks matter when it comes to YouTube?

I was watching becoming YouTube by Ben cook and on his second channel he asked how important looks were if you're trying to get big on youtube. I was wondering what your thoughts were.

Obviously it depends on what videos you make as to how important they are. If you make beauty videos compared to a game commentator for example. Personally I think as bad as it sounds, looking at what YouTubers are successful it does make a difference. Quality content is far more important than anything else obviously but there are plenty of youtubers who wouldn't be anywhere near as successful as they have been if they weren't good looking as sad as that may be.

I'd like to think looks don't matter when it comes to youtube, but you just know there are people out there who solely watch certain people because they are attractive. In the end, I think quality content wins out, especially for gaming commentators. I don't care about the looks of the people I watch on youtube - I love their personality and their videos. Unfortunately, not everyone is like that.

Yeah looks are the 1st thing a user sees so make your self look good and in return you will get a bigger fan base has they know your stuff is high quality.

I think its more about presentation then actually attractiveness, if there is a difference haha

people like jenna marbles and things obviously don't need to make decent content as they have a perv base rather then a fan base.
But i dont think anyone should be discouraged or feel they won't achieve success on youtube if they think they are unattractive.

saying all of this, i seriously look haggered in most of my videos, maybe if i shaved and did my hair i'd get more views? maybe i should test the difference? hmmm

I think looks really make your channel look more professional and funner to look at so more people come to your channel, if its just a plain background people are gonna think your videos are plain so in a way your background/avatar represent your videos so yes i would say they do matter

I'm not the best looking person on the planet - far from it but I like it "vlog" (I DESPISE the word "vlog").

Like someone above said, it's more to do with the quality of your video (both visual and idea),

Looks only matter if you think they do. Plus you can tell who's confident in their videos and you can tell who's not. Confidence makes some people more attractive.

Guys can kinda get away with it, unless they're like super freaky ugly or whatever (no offense). I feel that women have it tougher. If they're not hot or aren't showing cleavage, they'll get lots of negative and insulting comments. And if they are hot, they'll get pervy and 'tits or GTFO' comments. I've seen girls that, frankly, talk about nothing and are completely boring and whatnot... yet they're cute and you can see them jiggle when they move or whatever, so BAM, thousands of views and hits.
