Do Contact Info Dumps Below Desc Negatively Affect SEO?

Hey everyone,

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween. I was thinking of something recently while watching videos and browsing YouTube. Lots of people I noticed have small video descriptions followed by a page or more of different ways to contact them, find their other stuff, webpages, other channels etc etc.

Does that stuff negatively affect the SEO of videos? I always thought a good description was best because of how google / youtube work, but if 80% of the description is ways to contact people, links and other stuff, wouldn't that make it so your videos show up less when searched for, since it's mostly full of unrelated phrases?

Anyone know about this sort of thing?

You have to remember the #1 metric that YouTube is looking for: watch time/session time.

If you direct people away from the website, you're ending their session on YouTube which lowers your metrics for the algorithm.
So, it's a balance between building a community off of YouTube and keeping people watching.

It's for this reason that YouTube is rolling out the new 'Community Tab'. They want to give you a native space to interact without having to leave for twitter or snapchat.

Anyways, we're not telling you not to include social media and contact info in the description (we both do), but we are saying to be strategic about sending people off the YouTube site.

i dont think it will affect your SEO but you should consider that area as for a description purposes more than as marketing of your other social networks. if somebody tends to put links within the description, it is much better to put some links of other related videos in the channel. so your audience will keep watching your content.

I've moved this to the strategy forum. ^^

I'm not sure how true this is, but I've heard that both long descriptions and including hyperlinks help with SEO.
