Ditching your old channel, and starting afresh? Bad idea?

Hey everyone!

I currently have 17,000 subscribers on my channel.
Up until a couple of months ago, everything was going really well, I was getting an amount of views on my videos which I was happy with, and I had a steady gain of subscribers, and to top it off I was reacted to by a big YouTuber which gave me a few more thousand subscribers.

Then, the subscriber gain started to slow, and I was gaining less, and less each month, and I was quite unsure as to how at all to gain. I tried everything promoting, but just couldn't seem to get the gain. For some reason, a about a month back, my views on my videos started to drop considerably, and with each video uploaded I just received less views. I was only gaining about 30 subs a month, which was horrible compared to my previous stats.

Couple of weeks ago, I made a video expressing my opinions on a variety of topics sent in by viewers, one of which was abortion which I spoke strongly about. This opinion lost me two hundred subscribers.

I uploaded two days ago and have received less views on that video than I have in a long time in the first two days.

I feel like many of the subscribers which came initially from the big youtuber shoutout are beginning to leave as they were told to subscribe, rather than doing so because they actually wanted to. And if they aren't leaving, they're just dead subs.

I forgot to mention that for quite a while now, with each video I upload, I lose subs rather than gaining like normal people. Even before the abortion video.

I also feel like my videos have actually overall quite improved, but still I continue to lose subs.

My question to you is; would it be a terrible idea to create a new channel? To start afresh? I would let my current subscribers know, so my new channel would only have people that actually want to watch my videos, and not a heap of dead subs.

Have you tried starting again, or seen anyone else do it? Is it usually a fail, or a success? Bad or good idea? Just want to hear some other peoples perspectives.

I would hate to lose 17,000 subscribers, but right now they are slipping away anyway, and I have no idea why.

Thanks for your help,

Theo.

quite a tough situation your going through here i would just say have a hard long think about it and if you want to start fresh go for it
im right now Restarting i have finally got videos recorded which has been my down fall for a few old channels for me but yeah i feel really good for the new channel i am doing

If you are continuing in the same niche I don't see the advantage of starting a new channel. Rather identify videos that worked out well for you and make more of them. At your size you likely have a lot of comments. So listen to your audience.

You may not be actually losing subscribers. Youtube cleans up dead subs, this could be the reason for some losses. As for the abortion video, I understand as to why some people would unsubscribe. It's good you have an opinion about such a huge issue. However, I would try avoid making very strong opinionated videos because it will drive a wedge between you and some of your subscribers. Just work on making the best content out there, and not worry about subscribers or views. Have fun and take pride in making THE BEST videos :) That's what youtube is really all about.

So yea, I wouldn't switch channels. Just work through it :)

Starting over with 17k subs is a terrible idea. If you talk a lot about controversial subjects then there's going to be people who disagree and leave. Simple fact. But you shouldn't let that disuade you from saying what you think. Apparently being vocal about your opinion was respected by people enough to get you 17k subs, are you really going to call it quits because 200 people left?

In general my advice would be not to watch the numbers too much as they can only tell you so much of the story. Comments and likes are probably the best indicator about people liking or disliking your videos and opinions.

Yeah starting over is a bad idea.. you can always go private on a few videos.. and then refresh your channel.. new banner, new logo, make sure that the video is actually hitting peoples subscription boxes, I know that can play a huge part. I've also heard starting an engagement series works really well to keep up views. Either way.. good luck! Your channel is where I want to be!

In my opinion, I don't think you should create a new channel, unless you just wanted to start fresh. It's an awful lot of work and you'd have to understand that it may take some time for your new channel to grow. Not everyone will come over from your old channel. In fact, some of those channels don't even get used as much as they use to, so they may not even see the update. The people who came from other users did it because they told them to. They saw a couple more videos and found a disinterest in it. That's just the way it is. I started somewhat from scratch. I had a channel with over 1000 subs and only like 20 of them transferred over. If you're happy with what you're making, you should really stick to it and not care what others do or think. If you lose that perspective, you're only giving in. Lets say you moved over to another channel and you made good videos, like you're saying, and people still didn't subscribe... It just wasn't their taste. Doesn't matter what way you look at it, it just wasn't their thing. YOU are the successor or the failure to your own content. I mean you still have some people subscribed to you and you still have some views coming in. These are just my two cents on the subject.

I think that putting out anything controversial is probably going to cost you subs no matter what man... that's just a fact of life. :/
