Did "hey check out my video!!!" Ever strike gold?

I've got a yen for being in Japan!
you see it all the time, sometimes with a different spiel, "hey guyzzzzzz what's up?.. you never heard of me (made account 6 seconds ago) but I've got this awesome YouTube channel (with 13 subs) where we do awfff da huuk whack reactions and other cool shizz (3 videos total, 90% screaming, swearing or jump cuts) so check us out and help me reach my dream (being a millionaire by doing nothing) and take this channel to the next level (I don't know what that ever means) "

It was a big problem here a few months back, and of course it's on reddit which they rightfully hate as well, and other places.. here's my questions

1- has that ever made a video or channel take off and gain thousands of views and subs from it?

2- have you ever clicked on a video by and unknown starting up that actually deliver and was a great video that actually deserved a million views ?

I can't stand it, now I do encourage people to do this

"Hey guys I'am [insert name] and I'am a fellow YouTuber. I really loved your video especially [insert parts of video you liked to show you actually watched it]. If you get the chance, check out my channel, think you'd enjoy it"

But when people post a half-arsed

"YO check my channel out, it's lit!"

I'd never ever ever post a comment like that. 'Check out my channel, think you'd enjoy it'. My first thought if I'd seen that comment as a channel owner would be 'oh do you?? do you indeed!? So you presume to know what I like then?'

For me personally a good comment is one that is not contrived. If I comment on another channel its because I want to, and is normally about the video, asking a question or just having some input.

It never hurts to ask people to check out your channel. As long as you have watched theirs and contributed. YT is a community and you may never find a great channel if you only click on what you see. Maybe you'll see a "Hey man check out my channel if you want" and it actually ends up having great content.
 
I have quite a large channel for my niche, I get these comments every single day and most luckily end up where they belong... in the spam bin. For the ones that escape the net I just ignore the comment and they get no response from me.
 
I've done that when I was starting out. I was making minecraft videos, so I would go to other minecraft channels, watch their video and personalise my comment about the video. I would always subscribe to them and ask them to check my content to see if they'd enjoy it. Got me a few subs, picked up a few friends as well along the way.

I really don't like the ones described by the OP though, and will always delete them from my comments sections. If you can't be bothered to look at my content, you're not using me as a boost, pure and simple!
 
I find these kinds of comments depressing and/or disgusting. Especially when they are blatantly copy-pasted (the best ones I had was a guy that found hilarious the video where I said I was taking a break from youtube or the one that said "cool intro!" despite being the channel name fading in and out)

I suppose it can be also said in a manner like "I make similar content to yours, in that part I would have done this or said that" the person might be interested in seeing what you create for comparison purposes, but again it's going to give you feedback and only potentially a new source of views.

On the topic of the questions in the OP, on the first I don't have data to provide and answer, on the second I happen to have checked a few videos on the subreddits that are used for video promotion and stumbled on stuff a lot better than mine, at least on my point of view, from people with less subscribers.
 
I would say ive sneakily asked people to check my sh*t out.

But i would say it in a way such as : if im watching a gaming video il put 'hey dude nice video you did ALOT better than me on my playthrough!' things like that where im not directly asking for views but it gives you the hint i do make sh*t :)
 
I don't think anyone who makes great content would "NEED" to say that to get views, like hey sure you'll get 1 view out of 20 people maybe but that doesn't really matter. It's usually little kids that are 10-12 that ask for these type of things because well, they're kids and they are used to asking for stuff and getting what they want possibly? So I don't really care, if I see it, i ignore it - no point in responding back like an asshat esp if that person really is 10-12 years old creating content which is why a lot of familys don't like kids being on YouTube or making YouTube videos. ANYWAYS - no, no one has ever gotten famous or big spamming those kind of messages around.
 
Hey everyone I just wanted to let you all know that my channel is beyond lit and I don't really have any interest in yours because it is clearly not as lit as mine so please go check out my lite channel, thanks bye............:p

But yeah, no I don't appreciate when people do that. At least let the person know that you've also checked out their channel and a bunch of their videos, drop some pointers and then even still DO NOT solicit yourself. If someone is interested in your channel....then they'll click it.
