Custom Thumbnails

I've Got It
So I have been going over some old videos to see if I can give them a bit of a kick along. Changed the old thumbnails to custom. But a couple of the older videos are consistently in the top 10 of my analytics. My fear is that if I change the thumbs to custom on these videos, they will start to slip (Using the old "If it aint broke, don't fix it" theory)

I recall doing some SEO adjusting on some top 10 performing videos in the past, and they did actually slip for a bit, but bounced back higher eventually.

How do you make your thumbnails?

Usually I'd take a screenshot from the video while I am editing if there's a suitable one. Run it through Photoshop for cropping and anything else it needs.

If there's nothing good enough in the video, I'll go to Google images and find something suitable. Fix it in Photoshop etc.

I understand your worries. I've learned the hard way that I can't use myself as a scale for what others will think is good or bad. If you changed the thumbnails, it might be better, it might be worse. Personally I'd leave the good videos alone. Instead I'd consider changing thumbnails on videos that aren't doing well, at least I can't do any harm (Using the "the only way is up" theory) :)
