Custom sound effects?

I am not asking if anyone can make me some but I am asking if anyone makes these for their own videos and what kind of setup they use.

Last night I was trying to recreate the vocal sound effects of the game Darkest Dungeon and did get some really interesting effects with playing around in Audacity. So I can see some applications to be used for this and gaming videos.

Anyone else make their own sound effects? What kind of hardware or software do you use?
