Creating a more active community

So I think a lot of people on here will have a similar problem where your content is viewed but there is no further engagement (such as likes/dislikes and comments etc). I wish users were encouraged more by YouTube to actually engage with the content that they’re subscribed to...

This is one idea I had; you know when you open an app on your phone/tablet there Is sometimes a little popup to ask you to rate it? They’re annoying I know, but no doubt they increase the amount of ratings each app gets. Well do you think a similar thing could work on YouTube where when you watch some content that you are subscribed to, you are prompted by YouTube to either like/dislike or comment on the content before you leave the page? Or something similar?

I think something like this would create a more active community on YouTube, but I’d be interested to see what everyone else thinks of something like this?

That's why there are annotaions and stuff. Most people, myself included, forget to use CTA's most of the time. Most of the time you have to prompt people to do things, especially on the net when it's so easy to move onto something else at the click of a button. If you tell them what to do, most of the time people will do these things.

Like Robert said, that was one of the intended purposes of the annotations feature. Although I personally use custom overlays and animations that ask about liking the video, annotations are still an effective way of prompting the viewer and reminding them to let you know if they liked the video.

Yeah I do, I use both annotations and I prompt people to interact at the end of each video – but I think it could be beneficial if YouTube was sometime more active on getting users to engage with content.

Actually I found this to be a problem also and while annotations can work you can't use them on all platforms. I found a good way to engage people is always ask them a question, like what did you think of this game. Did you like the direction this movie took? That drives conversation into the comments, but then I also tell them they can talk directly with me over on twitter and that seems to build twitter followers. Just methods I found to help get people engaged into the channel.

I think that a prompted system would probably attract less viewer engagement, especially if it was a feature that could be enabled on certain videos. I would get pretty frustrated if I had boxes popping up asking me to like the video, you know. I think the annotation system is just a basic system for that, and I think it's probably the most effective approach aside from custom overlays/animations that you can add in your editing process.

it's a great idea when leaving the video you have to chose if liking it or not,it will dramatically increase likes and dislikes, maybe also forcing people to tell why they dislike if they do,so the author of the video knows where to improve or if the disliker is a troll

Are we talking that the person has to like or dislike? They can't ignore the pop up?

no, not at all - it would just be occasionally. Like how from time to time an app you've got will ask you to rate it? it doesn't happen too often, just every now and then. i think it might get people into the habit of being more active in stead of just viewing as well.

Not a bad idea then. Some people may need the reminder.
