Community, I need you help once more!

I am currently in possession of and working with a Dual core Intel Pentium 3 Xeon, 2833MHz and 4G of RAM memory. Lately my computer has started to run really hot when rendering video, and as a result of that the safeguard activates and shuts the computer down.

I've read that other people's processors usually run at about 30 - 40 degrees Celcius when "stationary", mine runs at about 80C! What could be causing this? Is it a simple case of opening it up and giving it a thorough clean, or should I consider buying a new fan that's better than the stock one?

I'd love to hear from you community!

I would say get an air pressure can and clean the vents with it first. If that doesn't do it then open it up. I would open it up at last resort since it voids the warranty.

I don't know man, my laptop was overheating like crazy and sometimes would just turn off on me a couple of times. I opened it up and cleared the dust from the fan and now it runs better. You should probably do what you have to do soon though, because overheating can cause damage. So yeah no idea.

Clean the heat sink specially if you haven't done it yet and place thermal paste to improve those temperature but cleaning the fan on the processor aka heatsink is all the way. That 80c is so hot for idle temperature

Shane
You can use Core temp to know the temperature of cores of your processor

Opening the case doesn't void the warranty, OCing it does however (for some)

Excuse my noobiness, but is heatsink and fan the same thing?

Yes the one in the center of you motherboard. They often called heatsink 'which are top on the processor. Look for those black dust underneath those fans. They really block those holes for the heat to dissipate. Fan>Dust>Metal Heatsink wherein normal one/new ones have Fan>Metal Heatsink. It would lessen the temperature for sure. Make sure you clean that every 2 months 'cause of that dust.

I see, so that's a fan on a metal block (the heatsink) on the motherboard, right?

Also, for decreased render times what is more important, cpu or memory?

Thanks for all the help btw, I really appreciate it :)

CPU is more important on render times. Yes that should be it like this. Look at those holes if those were infested with dust so clean it up :)
