Connecting with your audience...

I think one of THE most important things on YouTube is to know your audience and to really connect with them. Only thing is, we're not all nigahiga or charlieissocoollike so the comments we receive are far less. Less comments= less interaction with audience.

So... how do we really make a connection and know our audience without as much feedback?

haha i just watch your 20 things about you very nice job and you have an every so slight scottish lilt hehe and on the medschool thing you can apply again after you get to the third year honours science and again at the end of the last year oh and many people apply again while doing a masters. Third time's the charm that and all a+'s and a kick a** interview. :)

I get about 2-3 comments a video. I would obviously like more but hopefully as my channel gets bigger audiences the more comments i would get. I think asking viewers a question in the video (if your vlogging, news or even gaming) that would give them a starting point for the comment :)

I have an outro on my videos with links to other videos and I ask a question or something; I think an outro is quite a good time to ask a question because it's separate from the video. Awesome videos btw!

I don't get many comments on my youtube channel itself, but most of my audience resides on Facebook, so I use that as a means to connect withi my audience...also helps that my audience is mostly family and friends :-S

An important thing to remember about connecting to your audience is to respond to all comments. I know a lot of YouTubers that don't respond to their comments, which can make viewers feel ignored or like what they comment is unimportant. That can discourage them from commenting in the future.

Anna makes a great point.
Of course, if your channel grows to a certain size and your comments are endless, it becomes impossible to keep up, but while you're building your audience, why not take the 30 seconds it takes to reply? People appreciate it and feel like they're part of your clique in the community, and the community idea is important (and fun!)

I tend to get more comments when I make a video talking about an interesting idea or just generally something that gets a debate going within the comments. Like Anna said above, you should try to respond to a comment if it's a good one.

The ideas I usually talk about are to do with gaming but this should translate over into all sorts of other genres of videos as well. Just think of a good discussion point, construct your arguments/ideas in a concise manner and just roll with it.
