Commenting on videos?

It kind of depends how you comment. Commenting in and of itself is great! It only becomes counterproductive if you were to comment for the sake of creating a ruckus for no reason, or self promoting your channel. Self promotion on YouTube can work, but tends to backfire more often than not. But i'd say go for it!

I understand that commenting too much will look like spam. Does YouTube have a limit on the amount of comments that can be given each day?

Try to find small channels too! You'll get drowned out on the popular channels. I like going on reddit and finding other small gaming channels. I leave a relevant comment and allude that I have channel too like, "Oh I want to do a letsplay of that too" "I made a montage video of that too"

I agree with this. I always comment on small channel that I like. Partly just to share my love with someone who is in my position and partly because it can't hurt if some of their subscribers check my channel out. I never explicitly ask for people to visit me channel though. If it is relevant, I will try to subtly mention that I have a channel, but if not, I don't.

Not sure if any of this is working, as I don't know where my subscribers come from. At least its fun!
