Comedy fading away......

Comedy is subjective. No one is going to win in an argument over what's funny and what isn't.

Continuing off of this, everyone has a different sense of humor. This is the reason why some people get along better than others and why you might be able to have an instant connection with someone while you may not be able to really get to know another person even after years of interacting with them. Some people enjoy the slapstick humor, some like toilet humor, some have a very dry and sarcastic sense of humor. I don't think there is a lack of funny content, it's just a matter of finding something that plays with your own sense of humor. And if you can't find it - make it!

I really like this part a lot! That's how my brother and I felt. We felt that we needed to fill the gap that is our sense of humor on YouTube, and thus, Thrashimation was born (well, it hasn't been born yet. It is due for September ;) ).

You don't have to be funny to be ridiculously successful on YouTube.

Informative channels that teach people things are also popular, everyone doesn't just go to YouTube to laugh. Some go to learn how to do something or invoke social change, and have a laugh. Good thing there are all types of videos. I don't tell jokes or do skits because I'm just not good at it, nor interested in doing that stuff. I want to help people get better at a skill.

I love funny stuff, but to say you have to be funny to be success is just not the case. Yes, the absolute highest ranked tend to be comedy but if that's not your thing you can still reach the top 5000.

Some of my favorite top channels that are not funny but excellent.

Laughter is just one method. Maybe it's the most popular.
But what you want to affect the viewers emotions.
Whether it is make them laugh, make them think,
make them cry, make them relive a memory.

Speaking of making people cry... that newish viral video about the boys making the bus monitor cry - that's proof right there. Obviously it's just a viral video and not a youtuber, but still. It evokes anger and sadness.

Very true, very true. You can also count the family of their dead daughter, including her very f*****g gruesome post - car accident photos leaked on the web. I mean s**t, I've seen some gruesome pics/videos in my life, but the fact that her face was sliced in HALF is just heart breaking to me. I don't really like humor based around that sort of principle, because it makes me feel heart broken that something like that exists and I'm looking right the f**k at it. I may have said I like Happy Tree Friends, but the only reason why is because I grew up with the HTF shorts ever since it started in 1999, so it's kind of a nostalgia factor, even though HTF does get to that gruesome level of uncomfortable-ness (which was obviously the goal of the creators, lol).

Sorry if I'm going over board with it.

Eek, I don't think that's humorous at all. HTF is that uncomfortable humor in which it's so gruesome, but it's a cartoon so it's okay. Basically the same concept as Tom and Jerry and all of those Looney Tunes characters and that classic anvil dropping on someone's head thing.
