Hey yttalk I have been a lurker on the site for a little while but it's time to step out of the shadows because I need some advice. I want to start up a YouTube channel reviewing shows but I want to know how other people balance college and YouTube before I commit time and money into this

Hey Cokemaster0!

I have been doing YouTube since September 2015. I am currently 16 and in College and my channel is basically just vlogs and talking about random topics. I will tell you that its not actually that hard, if you make a schedule. Set a certain day and time that you want to record your videos and stick to it. I tend to do my recording on a Thursday night (cause that's when im home alone), then I sit and edit and create the video on the Friday morning when I have a day off college. Then, my video is posted on a Friday night!

That system works for me, but yours will be different depending on your college days, what your up to and your social life. I would reccomend you set an hour aside for recording, then at least an hour or two to edit. Then, while your video renders, leave it going and go do something else, cause that can take anywhere between 30 min and 2 hours.

All my other nights are usually spent doing coursework, studying and going to Nando's (i think I have an addiction). My weekends are my chill out times and I spend them out with friends, or watching Netflix (my other addiction).

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, just let me know.

My college hours kind of resemble the average work hours per day. So I get to spend the evening producing videos. I think if you have some extra spare time in your weekend you can definitely make it happen!

The "Scheduled" option on video uploads is your friend if you're limited on time. Plan your videos in advance, then the moment you get a free day, record as many of those planned videos as you can possibly fit in/do comfortably without the quality dropping. Then edit and upload them all, and schedule them to appear regularly on your channel.

The truth is, you can put as much time (and money - but don't) into this as you want to. Some people spend minutes per week on it, while others have whole teams working full time (obviously not when you start out) so there really is a wide array of effort from different people. I would suggest just going for it and seeing if you can find a balance that works. Be realistic, too. Don't let it get in the way of important 'real life' things.

Well it ain't easy my college hours vary from day to day some days I'm in for 2 hours next day i could be in 5 hours. I haven't really got a balance its usually I do what needs to be done for college and my free time goes into YouTube its tough work but I'm getting through it!

Best advice here, the misconception that a weekly video must be filmed each week is rubbish, if you can knock off as many as you can in the most amount of free time possible as consistency is key (this is a struggle with a poor schedule like mine) but yeah. Hope you join the community that is ever embracing.
