Channel is growing, views are growing, monetized playbacks drop!

So I run a YouTube channel with over 26K subscribers for more than two years, I've seen steady CPM values of $20 these two years with some fluctuations above and below that. My channel has been growing steadily for over a year and a half now, gaining 1000 subs a month and my total views have increased as well. Yet the amount of monetized playbacks has dropped significantly!

Over the last 30 days I've got almost 57.000 views on my videos, but only 7.500 of those are monetized playbacks... THAT's 13% OF THE VIEWS!!! Combine that with 81% of all my views are on computers, only 12% is on mobile.

This percentage to me seems very low, especially for a channel of my size. It was actually much higher than this, but it's been decreasing gradually over time now... What could be affecting this percentage and how can I increase it? Tried to get support from YouTube about this issue to get at least an explanation but without results. As much as I would like to keep making free content on YouTube, I also need to be realistic and say that this huge drop in income is making it harder and harder to sustain the channel, especially with the amount of work involved. This makes me sad, since I love making these videos and I love teaching people (this was the main reason I started the channel). Now the channel has grown so much it needs even more time and effort put into it to keep on improving, but that also means less time for jobs and work which also equals less income... I'm pretty much stuck here, what to do?

There is some logic to the idea that a high CPM will often in turn have a low monetized view rate. The logic being that fewer companies are advertising at that high level. July was also a rough month for CPM rates, especially compared to May and June. Now, whether this is what's hitting your channel or not, I don't know but it is something to consider.

Yeah I know but still, it is really low right now... Much lower than I'm used to and it's been decreasing for months now...

This is probably a dumb question, but are all of your videos actually monetized? If you have many non-monetizable videos then a large portion of your views can't get monetized playbacks.

Aside from that, it could just be a matter of competition and demographics. A lot of times the numbers just don't add up--I've had days where I get a view spike but there's no revenue spike, but sometimes I get a good earnings day despite average views. I'm not really sure, I assume it's because of the types of ads that are available.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried making videos with a bit more wide appeal? Most of your tutorial style content is very specifically targeted, ie. only people who already know the terminology will be able to search for and find it. Perhaps it would be beneficial to try out a "back to basics" tutorial series.

CURSE ADBLOCK AND EVERYTHING THAT THEY STAND FOR! URGH!

I'm just kidding, is there a thing about audience retention and such. Maybe they're simply clicking in, then leaving?

How's your viewership geographically and average watch time?
The majority of my views are from Central European countries or from the US.
Average watch time is 4:25, which is 15%.
I'm making more shorter videos now instead of the long ones, so I expect this percentage start to increase soon.

Yes all my videos are monetized except for two videos, one of them is generating quite some views a month, but even without that video the percentage of monetized playbacks is still below 20%.

That is actually a good idea, I might see how I can translate that to my channel. I've been thinking about this for some time now, another thing that I found helps is to do videos on sound of currently 'hot' producers and artists. That at least brings in more views so the monetized views will also become more, but the percentage will stay the same... I find it pretty hard to widen my audience, and I'm aware that it's the way to go for me. Been working on it, but it's easier said than done!

What % of monetized views were you getting in March/April? It could be a seasonal drop during the summer months.

Id say its probably this reason. I had a great June month, July dropped a little and this Month so far has been poor compared to the others when it comes to monetized views etc. Id expect it to pick back up as we push through to the holiday season.
