Channel identity

Hi there, i see you've found my thread. I have a simple question for any and all youtubers alike. When you first start out (Like i just have). How did you discover what you wanted to actually do with your channel? currently i'm honestly just editing and uploading whatever i feel like and there isn't any context to what i'm doing because i honestly have no idea what i want my channel identity to be. I have no idea what style of content i want to edit. But because i do gaming i have multiple options to choose from for example (Comedy, Serious play through, etc.). I am also having a hard time deciding what games i want to upload to my channel. I think most can agree that most gaming channels these days have a certain variety of games that they play and nothing else. But i don't want to just stick to some games over others, i honestly want to just play whatever i feel like and edit the footage to be entertaining. But its hard play everything and still have an identity if that makes sense? I know it probably doesn't but what is your opinion?

Thanks, Lageeto

I can see your dilemma with a gaming channel. Being a Blacksmith I really only have one choice. In my opinion, I really don't think it will hurt your identity doing multiple game genres. Gaming as a whole is your identity after all.

What I would do, is make playlists. Whatever genre game you are doing goes into your playlist for that genre. For example, my channel, I have a tool playlist, getting ready to add an edged weapon playlist, I have a general forging playlist, etc.

I'll bet your concept for the channel will change as you progress. What often happens is people come up with an idea of what they'd really like to do and then ditch certain ideas they originally had to do more of what seems to work best for them in terms of popularity. YouTube is very much a matter of demand regulating offer rather than the other way around in my experience.

Youtube is a funny old thing. I’ve been round the block with Youtube. I started making videos in 2011, my peak was in 2016 and I’ve taken a couple of years out and now I want to rebuild. You evolve with what you make, start with one thing and you could end up making something else! All I say is make sure whatever you are making, you enjoy it! Some people make content just for the views and that really isn’t a good. Start off with something you enjoy and go from there. Youtube is always hard work but it can payoff in time!

Plenty of channels evolve and change as they progress; sometimes this is a gradual shift, like how Nostalgia Critic drifted from doing traditional reviews, to having reviews with some skits, to having entirely skit based reviews; other times, a channel might experiment and have each video slightly different, until they find what works for them :)

Yeah. Interestingly enough, people are still attracted to "real". Using all the gizmos and special effects and all that fancy stuff on YT won't get you far if there isn't something real, something humane at the end of it. It doesn't need to be terribly philosophical, in fact it's best it isn't, but it needs to be genuine. Real. People sense that, and they'll come back to that channel with the 'real'.
