How do I get captions up on YouTube? I mean, I know where to go to upload, but does it have to be a specific format etc?

My best advice would be go to the edit captions part of video manager and simply edit the "auto generated" English captions using the inline editor. You will save yourself a lot of time and frustration :)

Those automatic captions are USELESS!
If you truly care about reaching people who are deaf or hard of hearing then you should take the time to write out your captions.
Or not. But those automatic captions are of absolutely no use. Go see for yourself. They make absolutely no sense.

I make closed captions for all my videos because I think it's important. It takes just a bit of my time and with that I make sure that deaf and hard of hearing people can understand my videos.

I use the website amara dot org (can't put links here).
It works like a charm. It's very easy to do it that way.
When you're done you download the file and then go to youtube and upload it there and BAM, done :)

EDIT: Well, I guess I need to go sleep. Because I misread the comments.
Yeah, editting what's already there could work! :D

Just to be clear, I was advising him to edit the automatic captions, not to use them. Once edited, they will be saved to a separate "English" caption channel. The advantage of doing it that way is that the automatic captions will probably be about 70% accurate, so a lot of time will be saved compared to starting from scratch.

now you just reminded me, i forgot to put captions on my video that i uploaded yesterday :)

also a tip there, if you want the captions to be there before your video gets public. put it on private, add the captions then put it on public/scedual it if you want
