Cant Copy Video Descriptions on YouTube

Michael

I Love YTtalk
This is something @Davison tweeted earlier on Twitter and it's certainly a move in the right direction in my opinion. Video thieves and those wanting to steal descriptions for themselves will now have more work to do to steal video descriptions, if you visit the watch page you're now unable to highlight any of the text in the description to be able to copy and paste it, there are ways to circumvent this but not everyone will be willing to or know how to. For the video creator this means if you wish to copy and paste your description you now have to edit the video by going to your Video Manager and then click on Edit before being able to copy the description.

What do you think of this? Should descriptions be like this? I am glad myself.

Yes, but It wasn't really a big problem when people copy and paste descriptions, but idk. People will find a way to bypass it though.

I know someone who constantly copies me and my descriptions, so I think this is great to prevent it from happening to others in the future.

Someone in the comments of the video showed the way to do it. Looks like people who are in the least bit technologically proficient won't be affected too much.

Definitely helps that they're like that now, but like NIP said there's always gonna be someone who finds a way around whatever they enforce. At least it'll stop the lazy people from copy and pasting. XD

I would say, it won't cause that much change.

Most of video re-uploads are done by bots and you can still copy it by going into inspect element.

TBH, I think it's even easier to copy paste when you know the trick... It would take longer if you try to copy lines that have text plus a link, but most of the time links just lead to social media or some other stuff that people who copy wouldn't want.

I think it's more work for the reuploaders which is good but then there's 1 little problem. Now if some one reuploads your video they are going to be encouraged to make their own description (hear me out I haven't finished) which then would make it harder for you to find the re-uploaded video, especially if they just changed the title. I like that they're preventing the copy and pasting of descriptions, I don't really see why it was allowed to be copied in the first place apart from when links had to be manually copied. I would much rather they looked for a different and better method to deter uploaders though.

I totally agree, this change is going to be a little benefit to the people who can actually think up something to say in their descriptions without chipping off a piece, or completely taking someone else's whole description for their own use. I have one quick question though, does this mean we can no longer copy and paste links to our social networking sites in our own video descriptions?
