Can't attach a lens to my camera

So my new camera came in this morning, I got it with a kit lens and a prime lens which work fine but then I remembered that my dad has an old camera with a macro lens. I took it out and started researching it to see if it's any good. It's a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD Di. It's old and probably the cheapest macro lens you can buy but I saw people making some cool pictures with it.
So I tried attaching it to my camera and it's not working (yes, I lined up the 2 red dots).
I have a Canon 760D (t6s) and the guy I watched on YouTube using it had a Canon 60D, he said it works on all Canon DSLR cameras.

So, am I an idiot and can't put a lens on a camera or is the lens not compatible with my camera?

P.S. The 2 other lenses I have are of the EF-S type so they use white squares to line up
 
Is it a mechanical problem or do the electronics simply not recognize the lens? In the latter case simply set aperture and focus to fully manual.

The lens just won't latch on to the camera. I think the lens mount on the camera is different to the one on the lens.

The video I watched was made few years ago and the camera I have came out this year (I think) so maybe this lens in no longer compatible with all Canon DSLR's, maybe I need an adapter.[DOUBLEPOST=1441720775,1441720470][/DOUBLEPOST]If you want to check out the video I'm talking about, type the name of the lens on YouTube, it's the first search result (by Christopher Frost Photography)
 
Yeah, I've done a bit more research and it seems like the lens has an AF mount comparing to the EF mount on the Canon.

Lesson learned, always check the mount type on the lens you want to buy (luckily I didn't buy this one). Anyway, thanks for help! :)
 
I think it's actually possible to buy this lens with the right mount for a Canon, this is why the guy in the video didn't need an adapter. My dad has a Samsung camera so he got the lens with a Samsung mount. I had a quick look for an adapter but didn't find one. I'm a bit busy with dealing with an issue with my Amazon order but when I get more time to find an adapter I can update you on the price.
 
Not sure if it's relevant for you, I have a friend who bought an old EF 50mm and can use it fine on his Canon 70D, but I found that I needed an adapter to use some old Canon FD lenses on my 100D. The problem I found was that the adapter wasn't quite right.

Pay attention to the models of camera and type of camera that the lens adapter is designed for. The older lens may work fine on a more expensive full frame camera, like the 5D, but on your 760D you would need a lens adapter with a correction lens built in.

Without the correction lens, the light won't converge completely on the sensor, as the sensor in the EOS cameras is a different distance from the lens than the film in the FD cameras.

If you want an example of what using these lenses without an adapter looks like, there's a video on my channel called "Old Camera Lenses" where I faced this very problem before learning about why it wouldn't work. The lenses will focus, but only at a very specific point. They can look artistic, but aren't practical in the slightest.

I did make the diagrams for the comment haha, I'm not very good at explaining stuff, so I thought a diagram would probably work better :)
