Canon T3i vs Camcorder

I'm looking to start up my YouTube channel, but I want to do it right so I will be investing in a new camera. I noticed that a lot of YouTubers use a Canon t3i (or similar) but the thing is they are meant for pictures. Can someone explain why they are using DSLR's? Should I get a DSLR or would I better off getting an Hd camcorder? What are some good cameras I should look into?

Fyi: I have taken four years of video production classes at school so using the camera shouldn't be problem. I am looking for something under $5oo, and it needs to be Hd.

People use them because DSLR's give great picture quality for the money, nice shallow depth of field, good upgrade options as well as huge lense kit. I'm surprised that in 4 years of video production they haven't taught you about that o.O

I know a lot of people I go to school get DSLR's because they are cheap and then upgrade the lens. But I am still confused why so many YouTubers use a camera that is meant for taking pictures? Surely they are better options out there.

A little over a year ago I had the same question. I chose the camcorder without really looking into it. Now I'm wishing I had gotten the t3i

You get more manual options with a dslr, like changing aperture, iso, etc. Lots of indie filmmakers use dslr cameras.

It really depends on what kind of filming you want to do with it.
If your making films I would say grab the T3i, if your blogging I would say grab the T3i or consider a camcorder
For image quality the T3i is the best in that price bracket, hands down. However, it will require you to learn your way around it. you will need to by lens for it, and most likely a microphone as well. On top of that you will need to take full control across, focus, aperture, white balance etc. It's not a pull out and start filming sort of camera, you do really need to set it up first. Also it's a bit big as well, it's not something you can throw in your pocket. However if your comfortable with all that I would say grab the t3i

Alternatively, there are heaps of other options, for point and shoot style cameras, The canon powershot cameras can be cheaper and don't require lens, you can also throw them in your pocket and blog almost anyway. Which is also the benefit of a camcorder.

BEST for image and sound: T3i with a microphone

BEST for run and gun pull right out of the box and start filming and a little bit cheap: Maybe look at a Canon powershot or another camcorder

Thanks! I do have some experience using a canon t2i, but not a ton. But I will probably end up getting a t3i sometime soon.

I definitely agree with untitled, if you want to have a lot more creative control in camera then hands down get the T3i. Creatively you have so much more control, you can swap lenses for different situations, looks, effects and if you know others who have Canon lenses you can always borrow some from them! Plus adding magic lantern to it and you'll gain even more control over your shots!

However, as mentioned above it does depend on the look and feel you want to create. I decided to go with the T3i when I was making a decision between DSLR vs. Camcorder and haven't looked back.
