Canon DSLR Questions

Ive been using the 40mm STM pancake lens with mine and I find that it still makes a little bit of noise autofocusing when recording but it would be silent using an external mic which is something I have to get. I cant recommend the lens enough though, it seems to be an all rounder lens, good for video and pictures, I have only used the kit lens once or twice because this ones so small, light and versatile.

I think focusing is the only thing I have found a bit annoying with it, for a long time I wasnt using the proper autofocus mode which meant every little movement I made I was almost instantly going out of focus, I finally figured out how to use it properly and it performs rather well now even with movement.

I dont think you need to spend that much on a mic - I purchased an Audio Technica ATR-3350 (I think thats the correct model!) lapel for around £20, and I think it does a great job for YouTube vids.
Yeah for lapels you can kinda go cheap. The problem is if you do anything other than vlogging in your home its useless without a wireless setup which runs like 150 usd. I would still reccomend the rode video mic because a) its more versatile and b)its going to sound better than any lapel mic if set up correctly.

As for the 40mm is the f2.8? How much does that one cost?

canon are like the best for dlsr video, the I have one myself and it is fantastic, especially for short films and getting a pro look :)

What did you do with the autofocus??
Thanks

It appears that it was set to FlexiZone single, when I have it as L+ Tracking it seems to work a load better, now its like it's tracking something moving correctly where as before it wasnt detecting movement and a small change would end up in the output being blurry, my current video settings are L+ tracking for the focusing 1920 x 1080, slight white balance adjustment to cover my poor lighting at night and RAW which I think might be forced with video anyway.

Oh I also found out theres a potential bug with the lens stock firmware for this lens, I might have to update it because any slight touch of the front of the lens can cause some issue or something, I am gonna try updating it now :D

We use a Canon 60D for our videos and I love the camera! However it does not have an auto focus while in video mode. When I was going to school for film production I was taught to use manual focus (as that is how they do it on big budget films) so it hasn't been an issue for me but may be something you want to be wary of if you were planning on using auto focus. In terms of all the different settings, it can seem like quite a lot at first but once you get using it, it's pretty easy to figure out. There are tons of YouTube videos out there that can help you show you all the necessary basics.

Wow, I hadn't been back on here for like a day and suddenly, all the informations! Thanks everyone! I think I will go with the 650D, because it's probably better suited for me. I'm looking at lenses at the moment, so I will take all this info and your recommendations and go forth and shop! Well, probably google some more, then shop :)

Pick up a STM lens - either the 18-135mm or the 40mm pancake ;)
