Can someone explain youtube's new algorithm?

Apparently youtube's new algorithm favors videos longer than 10 minutes. Can someone go into detail to help a few creators understand all the details.

What are the pros to making my videos longer than 10 minutes?

Can I still monetize properly from videos only 3 minutes long?
 
AFAIK, youtube algorithms are continuously updated, and are not published of course. There are some people, who try to reverse engineer it, but that's next to impossible, cause of flexible nature of this thing. Considering 3 min vs 10 min, I think it is mostly about total watch time, what seems to be far more important stat than views alone.
 
Pretty much what BazBattles said. Google wants people to stay as long on their page as possible, and the number of videos they watch during that time is secondary.
 
Yea man it's all about session time... and it doesn't even have to be your videos. For example, if someone starts their viewing session with one of your videos, and goes on to watch videos for a full hour (even if they aren't your videos) this reflects positively on your video because in youtubes eyes it got that person to spend a long time on their website.

So sure, longer videos can be good but only if they can hold the viewers attention... it's ultimately about pulling people over to youtube and having them stay there.
 
My videos usually top 10 minutes. But as far as people watching the whole thing? Some might, but overall? Nope! I get about 36% viewership on my videos.
