how did you guys decide what to make your brand we are trying to think of a logo but not sure what to make it

For me this is an ongoing process. I never seem to be satisfied (it goes for every thing from logo to font) so I just have to leave it at some point
I use fiverr a lot too. A lot of talented artists on that platform

I would say just start doodling and pitch ideas to your close friends and acquaintances at parties or events and see which one wins through your close knit. Basically your answer will be done by popular demand.

I've had good experiences with buying logos on BrandCrowd. The designer "LogoBrainstorm" did my last one and he has been really helpful. He made some additional changes and provided me with additional file formats long after the sale was complete.
