I would say through the elgato, sure in audacity you can edit your voice and stuff but it is synced up itself with the elgato.

I have messed around with it but it puts my audio over the ingame when i talk

Why don't you record your gameplay and then afterwards record voices with Audacity and just combine those in Sony Vegas or whichever program you have?
It still works!

There is no situation where recording your audio already mixed with the game audio is the best idea. Record vocals separately so you can edit them. Just snap your fingers in front of the mic at the same time you hit record for video and the audio spike gives you a perfect sync point.
