Best way to capture sound?

I mainly use a yeti, but my DLSR has a Rode mic that works pretty well. Oh and the Rode sits on the hotshoe and the cord plugs directly into the mic in port. You can then use the onboard mic settings to fine tune it or the toggles on the back of the Rode Pro:

What LED lighting are you using? Lamarr mentioned at Playlist he'd recently switched off of softboxes to LED. I'm a bit nervous that the light won't diffuse as well - interested to know your thoughts.

Ahh, damn. I love how compact they are, and it'd probably be good for highlight, but I guess I'm stuck with softboxes for my ambient. Ah well!

Yeah I've only used it to spotlight or really low light situations. If I stuck a plastic diffuser in front then turned down the power, it would probably be pretty soft lighting.

Alright, so at the end of the day, which one do you recommend guys? Shotgun of Liv Mic?

I can see how Liv can produce a much better result, but it's also more complicated to work with + you have to sync (which isn't a big problem, but still a bit of extra work). How would a shotgun work in a non-studio environment? Wouldn't it capture everything around, or does it do a well job capture the sound just about where it's pointing towards? Also, is Rode the best solution, value for price, etc, or is there a better one?

Syncing is easy since you can just clap sync and that's never caused a problem for me. I haven't taken my Rode shotgun outside my apartment yet. Next month I'm taking it to conventions to do interviews so I can't comment on how much ambient sound it picks up. There is a toggle to reduce the dB level to help that and it's directional and mono so it should only pick up what's in front of it.

I've only used Rode for hotshoe mics so I can't comment on whether if another brand is better or not.

What type did you use for your video in your sig?

Is there a significant difference in quality between liv mic and shotgun?
