Best Lavaliers and other microphone newb questions

Hi Youtubbers,

I have a couple of newb questions regarding whireless lavaliers and video recorders, and would really appreciate some quick guidance

My needs are
  • The Ability to stand at least 12 feet away from the video recorder (and receiver)
  • Good sound quality for speaking

My questions are
  • What are some of the best Whireless lavalier microphones you can get for around $200?
  • Are transmitter and receiver always included when buying lavalier microphones or do you just buy a random universal transmitter and receiver and use it with any lavalier?
  • If I want to shoot a video with 3 people, should I then buy 3 lavaliers and connect them all to one transmitter and receiver?

Well I have no answer about your question bcz Lavaliars are expensive and I have never tried
If I had to shoot video in public or far away, I will use phone recorder and attach any earphones with builtin mic :)

Ive tried cheaper alternatives, and bought a good few mics so far
none have worked apart from when i tried the Rode videomic pro in store, which i plan on buying

My advice would be dont always believe what videos testing the mics might say, because at least for me they turned out very different
I think i heard some good things about the more expensive audio technica Lav mics :)

WIREless lavaliers are generally very expensive. The Sony systems that come with a transmitter, mic, and receiver cost over $700 USD. There are some cheaper brands on B&H, however I don't know enough about them to recommend them. Read up on reviews. There is the Polsen ULW-16 that seems to be closer to your budget and has 4/5 stars and a bit over a dozen reviews. Again, I can't make any personal recommendations for brands I don't have experience with.

An alternative to an expensive wireless lavalier mic, if you want to save some money is to use an iPhone and the headphones/mic it comes with. What I do when I cant use my Zoom H1 for whatever reason, is I get a bit of sticky tape and tape the iPhone headphones to the inside of my shirt so the microphone is near the collar of my shirt. Then I plug it into my phone and use the memo recording app that comes on the phone and put the phone and excess headphone cord in my pocket and I am good to go! After recording, just email the sound recordings to yourself and download them onto your computer!

Wireless lavs and the transmitters definitely are pretty pricy - if you want to consider an alternative that works pretty great, Rode has the SmartLav, which connects to your iPhone (assuming you have one). It's available for a pretty great price. I'm a huge Rode fanatic, so I definitely stand by their quality.
