Best device to use for capturing gameplay?

Check out Elgato game capture device, a lot of youtubers use it and the software that comes with it makes recording and streaming really easy[DOUBLEPOST=1477279786,1477279634][/DOUBLEPOST]Specifically the Elegato Game capture HD60, it's not cheap $180 US.

Thanks for the reply. I've heard about Elgato but I thought there were other devices as well. I'll check it out thanks

Does anyone know how YouTubers capture gameplay and upload it? Like for Xbox one, PS4,3DS etc etc
Please help

It really comes down to what your budget is.

If you're using a PS4 then straight away you already have an available option. The PS4 has an in built capture device that is constantly recording game-play (15 minute limit) which can be exported onto a USB. Although the 15 minute limit is a pain in the butt, it can still be used if timed correctly. Obviously not ideal but if you're on a budget and need something to get started then it should get you going.

As a new YouTuber myself I don't have the biggest budget on the planet so I purchased one of those "generic" looking game capture devices off ebay (Just search "HDMI Capture Device") for around $70-$80. You plug a USB/SD card into the device and you pass the game console signal into it via HDMI which then outputs via another HDMI to the TV. It also comes with a jack to plug a mic in for direct audio recording. I'm sure lots of "professional" YouTubber's would shun this product but its cheap and does the job in 1080p.

If you have a higher budget then definitely go for the Elgato as mentioned above. Although this product isn't cheap its the most well known and probably the highest quality. Once I get established a little and begin to make some $$$ I'll probably reinvest and get the Elgato myself.

Hope this information helps.

Thank you! That helped a lot ! This may be a dumb question but before I made this thread I heard a lot about how you need an HDMI cable. And then you just mentioned you have a HDMI capture device. So like my question is does the elgato has something similar like an HDMI cable? I want to do all my research before buying so the Elgato will be connected to the TV,laptop, and Xbox one? Right? Thanks in advance

I believe the Elgato works different to the HDMI Capture Device I have.

The Elgato has 2 HDMI slots... an input and an output. Basically your Xbox One will plug into the Elgato input rather than into the TV and then from the other output slot you will go into your TV (So the Xbox One can pass through it). It then has a USB slot which will plug into your laptop/PC where you will install some software and you'll then be able to capture your footage. HOWEVER its recommended that you have a decent performing laptop/PC to capture smoothly without frame loss.

If you don't have the most powerful laptop/PC then I recommend you take the other route and go with the HDMI Capture Device (the one I have). This method does not require a laptop/PC. You set it up the same way as the Elgato but instead of plugging in a USB cable, you plug in a USB storage device (either external HD or thumbdrive) and it records game play directly.

If you want to see the quality that the HDMI Capture Device produces then feel free to check out my channel.

Just a quick heads up though, the elgato will capture xbox one and ps4 and what not but you'll actually need a separate capture card for the 3ds. But i can back up the other guys in saying the elgato is the way to go.

What's the name of the capture card that is needed for the 3DS?

3ds capture cards are typically a pain in the butt to get but there are a few big websites that you can get them from. I'd just google it and you'd find them. I'm just typically skeptical since they want you to send your 3ds in. But yeah they are pretty expensive too unfortunately. I did have a friend get one from 3dsvideocapturecard.com if your looking for specifics.
