Benefits/features of buying video editing software?

Hey everyone,

I have been using iMovie to edit my videos, which obviously doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles. I was looking through some threads here about editing software people use. What I'd love to hear is what functionality do things like Vegas and Adobe Pro have and why I might need them? So far, I just vlog into the camera, but I am sure I can make my videos appear more professional through better editing software.

Personally I'm interested in upgrading to help with color correction and pan/zooming! No real hurry though.
 
If you're just vlogging iMovie should provide enough things to it, but if you want to go really full forward with it, other editing software can allow you to accomplish things like colour correction for your videos, audio mixing and more freedom on how to make your video look the way you want :)
 
They have lots of advanced features, but don't waste your money if you don't need them. You can always try the 30 day trial if you want to try it out!
 
For things like color correction anything will do, but little things like tracking and roundtrip to After Effects put me on the Premiere wagon against Vegas. It's just the subscription issue that kills it for me, but premiere elements has this kind of bells and whistles.
 
The benefit feature is that you'll have a professional industry standard piece of software to work with that can do very powerful editing. Honestly I doubt you need it if you just cut and paste vlog footage though. There are better ways to improve the quality of your videos that have little to nothing to do with editing software.

1. Hardware. You can invest in a good semi-professional HD camera, audio hardware and some lighting equipment and set pieces to give your footage a more professional look, just by having proper lighting. Do some research into lighting techniques for camera shots.

2. Read up on more advanced rendering settings that may improve the way your final video looks.
 
I have been using Sony Vegas 10 Pro. I really like the editing software, and for carvlogs and carshow footage it does really well. I like how I can digitally zoom in on footage, and move within the frame to create a seamless movement. My action cam has no zoom capability, so digital zoom gets used to get the action a little closer from time to time. But if you have a regular camera that has zoom capability it's not really needed. Digital zoom comes in a loss in image quality anyway, I just use it because it creates a better video movement in some cases.

I also use the color correction feature to create a more true to life color palette and the pro-titer tool for my intro text and sometimes subtitles.
