Be careful with Youtube Ad campaigns

Dear all, I just want to say when considering Youtube Ad Campaigns you have to be careful.

First of all one of my campaigns went far over the daily budget, which means I had to pay way more than I've set up.

Second, the video I promoted was quite a good video with fair Youtube ranking. after the first day of the ad, it completely destroyed the Youtube ranking, getting alsmost no generic views through the Youtube search.

I'm very sick of it, because it costs money, and the result is a mess...

May you provide screenshot if possible? I mean the reports.[DOUBLEPOST=1436630497,1436630436][/DOUBLEPOST]
I've actually had a decent bit of luck over time as I've learned how to use their filters and such. My gaming channel only has two videos with over 50 views, and it's because I gave em 3$ each (I think anyway, it may have been $5, but this was months ago). You need to make sure that you're showing your prerolls on videos that potential fans of your content would like. If you just say "Alright, here's five bucks, give me fans please!" then you have no clue who is looking at it. Admittedly, engagement is usually very low, but you can optimize the ad for subscribers rather than viewers, and maybe that works (I haven't tried it just yet). I can understand why someone with a bigger channel would be a bit more reluctant to take the risk though

Whoah, $3? Hmmmm, I am pretty sure I paid $5 for a video of mine and it gathered like 2K-3K views.

so you paid for this service, and they charged you over the ammount because it did well? :O
Yes I paid for their service, yes they charged over the amount, but I guess no; it's not because it did well, it's because they found so many viewers to advertise with, they were unable to stop on time.

Yeah I tried it out. I gave it the ol 5 dollar trial... Once it ended it was like an extra ten cents or something (not a huge deal) but the minimum I could pay to them was 10 bucks. Still not a huge deal, but just as annoying.
Oh, I earn some bucks from Adsense, and put it away in adwords. I ran a campaign for 0.75 cents a day, and they managed to get $3+ for one day! That's over 400%!!!!

Did you actually get charged this amount from your card/account though? You shouldn't have, normally anything that gets over served is free because it's Google's issue not yours. Otherwise you may have set it to automatically continue for a certain time frame, if so it would have charged you per full view & click.
Thanks for your info. I did not get charged yet from my card. I will keep an eye on it, but if anything overserved is free, then i think that's fair.

I had a similar problem. Campaign was set to $10 per day MAX, and AdWords somehow managed to spend more. Luckily it wasn't much but still shouldn't happened.
I won't die because I have to pay more, but it's just the idea I don't like

Oh, I just wanted good viewers with good audience retention to boost the rankings of my video. That was the original idea. Not to kill it. :([DOUBLEPOST=1436630925,1436630674][/DOUBLEPOST]

Check thumbnail :). I'm sure you won't get 2K views with 5$. Maybe you used another service?

I used adwords. I only paid $15 (minimum) then everytime I have a special video(not let's play) I use $5.
Check the attachment. That is worth $15 all in all. 9K views for $15. Not bad imo.

Thanks for your insight. But I wonder where the difference comes from, between my stats and yours. I mean; I pay 3$ and get like 300 views. You pay 3$ and get like almost 2K views....?

It was my first time to use it. I don't know, I just accept everything when creating an advertisement.:/

When I first started using it, it was for my music channel, and I saw similar huge view counts for cheap, but it's because I set the max cpv as low as it could possibly be, so my average watch time was like 30 seconds. Almost all of the ads were in Taiwan and Vietnam, and none of them wanted to see more :'( I've not gotten more viewer engagement since paying more to get better targeting, but I have experienced better audience retention in terms of watch time. My video with the most views is also the longest, and an eighth of those who saw the ad watched the entire 90 minute video[DOUBLEPOST=1436643673][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, I have 5 subs and you have nearly 2k, so maybe that affects things somehow or another lol

The stickiness of those viewers through ads is generally terrible. People do see your ad, but they don't stick to your channel (see your other videos or even become subs). Usually the more experienced Youtubers create a video assigned to lure new subs in through the ads.

It does affect things somehow, in this example: you have only 5 subs, so the Youtube rankings for your video is most likely to be non-existent. I do have higher Youtube rankings, and the ads destroyed my Youtube-rankings. When you go from non-existent to non-existent is not a big difference. From fair YouTube rankings to non-existent is terrible for me :(

Non-existent is a bit of a rude way of phrasing that, but I get ya. I meant an effect on the view count received through ads, not the effect it would have on the audience retention and video ranking. I'm just trying to express the point that it's possible to have a successful ad through adwords if you have your prerolls shown to the right audience, and you can hook them in within the first 5 seconds. You aren't likely to get subs, but I usually get views on other videos, at least on the music channel, and they generally help my watch time a great deal, especially with longer videos because of the handful that will sit and watch the whole thing. You should always be careful with what you're investing in, but I don't think adwords should be written off as a waste of money

I set the budget to $100 for a day and it went to $257 within a couple minutes and then stopped. I was charged all of that. And Adwords only charges your card once a month or when the balance exceeds $100, whichever comes first.

The Adwords lady who contacted me wants to work with me to create the most effective campaign I can. But she needs me to make 5 videos that are 30 seconds long. They can be new ones or cropped versions of existing videos I have. Then I need to put them in a playlist of their own and save up $2,100. Once I have that, I'm supposed to contact her and she'll help me make a campaign using those videos with her optimizing the audience targeting with a daily budget of $70 that will run for a month. It will take a while for me to save up that much, but I'm planning on doing it to see how it goes. Once I have my credit card paid off I should be able to start saving toward it.
