The toys & kids niche is hyper-competitive.
There are literally thousands, if not tens of thousands, of channels popping up every month.
Our highest traffic source is 'suggested'. so that means are videos are on the right side of large channels, hence traffic comes from there.
We've probably been on suggested of 500k+sub channels about 6-8 times.
To get in there it's seo. By seo I mean everything, not just having tags. So it's research on what videos are popular, where there are gaps in the market that can be filled, etc. By no means at all have we even approached close to what is possible. It's a daily grind, but a good grind.

Edit:

I got to think, it may be best to call it YTAlgoOptimization, or ytao. That will be my new term. It's more than just seo, it's optimizing your channel and everything about it, including the videos you choose to make, to enhance discoverability and placement by the algorithm.

I don't market. I have found social media to be a complete waste of time. A few months ago I ran Adwords campaigns but have pretty much stopped those now. I focus on seo (t/t/d/cc/pl/c/ann).

That's really cool. I have hard time with social media haha. I need to learn more about SEO. Are there any books you recommend to read? Thank you!

Books, not really.

I read a lot of the reelseo website, which is now called tubularinsights:
tubularinsights dot com slash video slash seo

I also did many of the online courses provided at the YouTube Creator Hub

Of course the threads here are great, especially all the sticky ones.

And a good friend on here, @FamilyToyReview has been invaluable in providing info in our many discussions.

And I use TubeBuddy a lot

And research in depth what other big/successful channels are doing with their seo and video strategies

Hey how much did you spend cuz i am only 15 and I can't spend that much but i might consider maybe.

I tried various things:
- spend $5-$20 on a new video to jump start it into search
- spend a certain amount per playlist, for example $10/day for a playlist with 5 videos with equal viewing or optimized for views for the set

For the previous few months I spent 10%-20% of revenue. So If the channel made $1k that month, I would spend $100-$200.

Ultimately what I found is it doesn't make a difference. If you target a video with seo into a popular topic, the views will come from YT naturally withing a few days. You can spend that $10-$20 or not, it doesn't make a difference to whether the video will be picked up.

What I do recommend Adwords for, is if a channel is stuck at 50 subs with 20 views per video, it may be prudent to try Adwords to get some traffic going and some subs, just to pick it up and get it moving.

I average 902 views per day, which is pretty good, I think. Been at it 2 years, but my channel is incredibly...specific. :)
