Hey everyone! Just was wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks on how to increase audience retention... I have been working my butt off trying to put quality into my daily videos... trying to keep my videos entertaining with good quality recording/editing and commentary throughout, but my audience retention is still hovering around 30% and I don't know why.. am I doing something wrong, or are there certain things one must do to maintain the attention of the average viewer.. Any help would be appreciated :)

Very little you can do to be honest. I have an app in google chrome called VidIQ that lets me know all that sort of stuff like tags, audience retention, facebook shares, tweets, ect. The point is even the huge channels like pewdiepie and others have a very low retention. I think its more about the length of the vid to be honest. I make mine around 15 minutes but even that is too long if I want my retention score up.

Biggest thing is if you want organic retention though is to be high energy. You gotta keep people excited from the very start. If you start off slow or anything less people will leave. Make sure everything is tip top quality audio, video, ect. Make some shorter ones with that mantra and see if it works out. Hope this helps.

im making highlight videos like 5 mins and episodes of series about 10 mins.. just don't know what I can do to improve that percentage... I thought youtube worked on retention and promoted the channels with more retention..

For one HD is a must now before it was fine not to have but in this day and age people are used to HD and the quality of a video is partly what keeps people watching the video. Another thing is remember to slow down, sometimes it becomes hard to understand what your saying or when you get to excited the words jumble so try to keep the words coming but don't just throw them all out. Also as a smaller channel its hard for people to remember you even after they have subbed to you simply because they have the larger more established channels in front of them. So unless you can leave a lasting impression views and audience retention will come slower. Keep at it thought you are entertaining and I think you can do really well if you keep going :)

Switch your content up. Also if you have done sub for sub than that can be the reason why. When you do sub for sub those guys typically dont watch your content. For them its only for the sub count.

Not that I am endorsing it, but Sub 4 Sub wouldn't hurt audience retention because most who do it wouldn't be watching the video in the first place. Audience Retention is the estimated average minutes watched per view, not the percentage of subs who watch the content.

Making series of videos is very helpful in my opinion. I guess my channels have a good retention of audience because of it. In the other hand, they can't be too long or people will just stop watching with the time. I'm also not considering that almost nobody makes videos of the games I do with commentaries in Portuguese, so the public doesn't have many options xD

Of course, putting a good amount of editing into your videos, whether they be gaming or vlogs, will only benefit you. Shorter videos tend to get better audience retention, because the audience isn't as intimidated by the length of the video. SeaNanners is a good example, since he's put out 3 minute, daily gaming videos for quite a while now.

However, there is no absolute solution to audience retention. People will watch whatever they want, and when they're not interested, they click away to something else. Your audience will build itself if you're confident in your ability to make content, and have moderately decent equipment to use. Good luck, sir. It's a 10 year long marathon.

Be brief. Get to the point as fast as possible while still providing value to the viewer. :)
