Are giveaways good or bad?

I always see people on YouTube having giveaways at certain milestones, let's say 1000 subs and you get a free steam code. What do you guys think of this. Everytime I see it I can't help but think all the subs this person is going to get will not watch their content until his or her give away, and if they don't win, unsub and never look back. Am I just a pessimist or should this practice be avoided?
 
I find it annoying, yet there will be that one lucky fella who dreamed to have his own Beats by Dre headphones and end up winning the contest, but never received his package deliver... oh I am sorry, I was getting off topic...

It does gives out the benefits of active audience, possible increase of views and subs. However I'd only see this work with either a tech reviewer, cause its part of their strong points for their content and it seem to be fair enough for them to use this type method for better relatable exposure. And the other one would already Big Youtubers. If you're not neither of those two, then I'd recommend not to do a giveaway, cause its just another away of begging for attention from random audience who don't know you so much.

I wouldn't say my opinion on the matter is as strong as yours. I too have a negative view towards it for the most part, was just curious what the yttalk community thought
 
Giveaways are good to bring in an audience but most of the time that audience will not stay. They will come for the giveaway and maybe chat but then they will leave. SOme of thier account will still stay subbed however, they will become in active or just unsub. Both are bad for your channel growth.
 
Sadly, a majority (not all though) of people doing giveaways are legit, and end up using a fake name or whatever and saying "Jeff Jeffery is the winner! Congrats, bro! I'll be getting in contact with you shortly!" People that genuinely do giveaways for their subscribers aren't doing to GAIN subscribers. No one is going to simply subscribe because you are doing a giveaway, if you are giving the video to the same people, then only those same people are going to see it? However, that being said! I personally know some people who have utilized social media, and gained a vast amount of views/potential subs from doing giveaways. I'm not going to relay the details on how to do it here because you'd most likely get in trouble for it.

As for the giveaway thing in general? Sure, why not?
 
I am waiting patiently for 1000 subscribers then do a giveaway. However they don't know this in advance and I'm not promoting the give away at all yet until I reach 1000. This means that at least the majority of the 1000 sub because they want too and not because of getting free stuff. I'm sure I'll get people that subscribe to my channel just because of the giveaway but when the time come, I'll be super excited that I just want to show my appreciation to someone! I'll also let you know how many people will unsub afterward lol
 
Giveaways are good if done properly.

For example I got a beta key for a game that I couldn't participate in, so I gave it to a subscriber through commenting on a video. The catch? They had to have been subscribed before I posted the giveaway.

Trying to leverage people to subscribe to your channel is pointless and just results in inflated numbers and you giving things away to people who have done nothing for you. Giveaways to show appreciation towards those that have supported you is a great idea.
 
Giveaways are an awesome way to interact with subscribers but I would wait until I have some dedicated ones that won't steal the prize and leave :P
 
I don't think it's a good idea to try and get subs that way, but it's a nice way to show appreciation to subs you already have and build a stronger connection there. Basically, it's fine when it's a legitimate "thank you", terrible to try and get new active subs.
 
I personally don't like them, I feel it is the same as buying subs. I do think it still works after all the unsubbing and what not after the contest, but it seems it only works well for really big youtubers.
Instead I would say take the money you were gonna spend on a prize and spend it on other things like a better mic or even ads for your channel
