Are Custom Thumbnails imperative or just a nice touch?

It's hard to say a definite yes or no, but it's one of those things that if you have and make 'good looking' consistent thumbnails, people would be more likely to click your video over someone else's. It's not a must, but it's definitely important. Not to mention more professional!

It's all brand recognition. Like how if you see golden arches you think McDonalds or if you see a swoosh you think Nike.

I think if you establish a format for your thumbnails, eventually people will be able to pick out your videos easier.

I really think it can only help. Especially if you can make them engaging and organic to the plot of the video... Some people also go the other way and just use a real attention-getter image, that has nothing to do with the video, but lures viewers in anyway. I also think the comments on branding were on point.

I just love doing thumbnails , they are really important , if the thumbnail is appealing people will click on the video, simple as that xD
