Are Custom Thumbnails imperative or just a nice touch?

I am just beginning to use custom thumbnails, and I like how they look, but I heard before that custom thumbnails are a must for your channel to grow. Is this actually as imperative as people make it seem or is it just a nice touch to your videos?

I love using custom thumbnails! Because half the times my videos original thumbnails are just crap, so I take screenshots of my videos during the editing process to get a better thumbnails.

And also you'll make your videos look more attractive.

Imperative is such a strong word. It is very beneficial to have thumbnails that reflect the content of the video

They're pretty freaking important. I had the BEST thumbs EVER, made by Katherinejane001 but now her computer is broken and all my videos are thumbless.... it's pretty devastating for me. I've been seeing a therapist over it.

Custom thumbnails are a great way to advertise and help your channel grow! It also helps your current subscribers, as it is much easier to find a video via personalized thumbnail than through a standard YouTube in-video thumbnail. Hope that helps you!

I think if designed correctly custom thumbnails can attract people to your channel / content. I literally unlocked the feature 2 days ago, I havent seen any significant increase in traffic, may be that is due to my small size. I wouldnt say it is a 'must have' but any feature which enhances your channel design is a benefit in my eyes.

It's hard to say a definite yes or no, but it's one of those things that if you have and make 'good looking' consistent thumbnails, people would be more likely to click your video over someone else's. It's not a must, but it's definitely important. Not to mention more professional!
